#USCPISoon

US September CPI lands today at 8:30 AM ET, and the setup is odd: the headline is expected to jump while the number the Fed actually watches is expected to cool. The data isn’t out as I write this, so this is a scenario map, not a reaction post. Here’s how I’m reading it.

1. What’s expected
Headline CPI is forecast at about +0.6% m/m, pushing the annual rate to roughly 3.6–3.7% from 3.4% in August. Forecasters disagree on that last decimal. Core is seen near +0.2% m/m, with annual core at 2.4% or 2.5%, again split almost evenly. The headline jump is a gasoline story: pump prices averaged above $4.30 a gallon in September, a record for the month, with the Iran war keeping oil elevated.

2. Why core matters more than the headline
The Fed hiked 25bp on Sept 16 to 3.75–4.00%, its first hike since 2023. The next meeting is Oct 27–28. Before the jobs report, markets priced roughly a 70% chance of an October hike. Reports now put it near 20%. So a fuel-driven headline is mostly expected. A core surprise isn’t.

3. Three scenarios
Cool core (0.1% m/m, or annual core slipping to 2.3%): October hike odds fade toward zero and risk assets get relief.
In line: the hardest one to trade. The headline pops, algos react, then core gets read and the move can reverse. I’d rather not trade the first candle.

Hot core (0.3%+ m/m, or 2.6% y/y): hike odds jump, yields and the dollar firm up, risk assets sell. One options-data report already shows December hike pricing around 85%, so a hot core would put both meetings back in play.

4. BTC’s map
BTC was near $83,400 in early US hours today. One report has 7-day implied volatility around 32%. My math from that: about ±1.7% for a single day (roughly ±$1,400) and ±4.4% over a week (roughly ±$3,700, so $79,700 to $87,100). The same report says the biggest put concentration on the Oct 16 expiry sits at $76k–$80k. From $83,400, $80k is -4.1% and $76k is -8.9%. The $90k call strike is +7.9%. Positioning looks more protective than greedy, but options levels are a sentiment gauge, not a floor.

5. BTC vs stocks vs gold
My guess: BTC moves first because it trades 24/7. Stocks tell you whether the move has legs. Gold is more tied to yields and the dollar, so a hot core hurts it more than an energy-driven headline. That’s my opinion, not data.

6. What could break this
Core is sitting right on the 2.4/2.5 edge, so one rounding decides the narrative. And oil headlines from the Middle East can overpower a CPI print within hours.

My take: I’m not trying to predict the number. I’m watching core and the first 30 minutes after the release. If core is cool, relief makes sense, but a headline-only pop I’d fade. If core is hot, the $80k area becomes the first real test. Waiting for the print costs nothing, and being early on a coin flip costs a lot.

Not financial advice.
Which reacts most today, BTC, stocks or gold? And are you positioning before the print or waiting for core to settle the story?
