#美国9月CPI即将公布 U.S. September CPI Preview: The Divergence Between Headline and Core Inflation Is Tonight’s Real Focus
At 20:30 tonight, the U.S. September CPI will be released. This is the final inflation report before the Fed’s October 27-28 policy meeting, and it could directly reshape market pricing.
Data expectations: “Blowout” headline, “moderate” core
The current consensus among institutions is that headline CPI will rise from 3.4% year over year in August to 3.6%, with a 0.6% month-over-month increase, the largest gain in five months. But this is mainly driven by gasoline prices—U.S. gasoline averaged a record $4.33 per gallon in September, and the jump in the energy component is already priced in by the market.
What truly deserves attention is core CPI. Institutions expect core CPI to rise just 0.2% month over month, down from 0.3% in August. Barclays and Morgan Stanley both forecast a 0.24% month-over-month increase in core CPI, down 5 basis points from August’s 0.29%, mainly due to a slowdown in the increase in wireless communications service prices.
In other words, the “blowout” headline inflation reading has already been fully priced in. Whether core CPI deviates from the 0.2% expectation is tonight’s real risk point. BofA economists explicitly noted that if core CPI reaches 0.3%, it could reignite market speculation that the Fed may continue tightening.
Which of the three asset classes will react more strongly?
BTC’s reaction to CPI is the most dramatic. During CPI releases, intraday volatility in BTC/ETH is commonly 5%-15%, while altcoins can reach as high as 10%-30%. BTC is currently under pressure near $81,000, and the market has already begun reducing risk exposure. If core CPI exceeds expectations, a stronger dollar and higher Treasury yields could push BTC further downward; if the data is moderate, a rebound could follow as the bearish news is priced in.
U.S. stocks tend to react more moderately. Based on statistics from the first nine CPI releases this year, when core CPI was below expectations, the S&P 500 rose an average of 0.65% on the first trading day after the release and gained an average cumulative 3.73% by the 20th trading day; when it exceeded expectations, the index was virtually flat on the first day.
Gold is currently trading around $4,200. High oil prices are keeping inflation risks elevated, and the CPI data will determine whether the bond market has a new reason to push yields higher, thereby suppressing gold prices.
Strategy considerations
My view is that core CPI is more likely to come in at 0.2%. The housing component has been stable recently, with seasonally adjusted monthly gains remaining in a narrow range of 0.1%-0.3% from June through August; core goods appear to have peaked under the impact of tariffs. As long as core CPI does not deviate from 0.2%, the Fed will most likely remain on hold in October.
As for trading timing, I would rather wait for the data to be released and confirm the direction before taking action than place a bet in advance. The first 15-30 minutes after the release are often the noisiest, and the real trend usually requires confirmation from price action and trading volume. The biggest risk on CPI night is not the data itself, but changing the plan impulsively amid the volatility.
