#每周来晒 #韩股大跌你会抄底吗 South Korea’s Stock-Market Crash Raises a Critical Crypto Question: Can Equity Margin Calls Trigger Another Wave of Bitcoin Selling?
The warning from BitMine chairman Tom Lee is about more than falling stock prices. It highlights a potential connection between equity-market stress and crypto liquidity. When investors face margin calls or need to cover losses in one market, they may sell other liquid assets to raise cash. Bitcoin and other digital assets can become part of that adjustment, especially when leveraged positions are already vulnerable.
On October 13, South Korea’s KOSPI suffered a sharp sell-off, falling more than 7% intraday before recovering part of its losses. The index was reported down approximately 5.5% at 6,035.35. Samsung Electronics lost 7.4%, while SK hynix fell 10.1%. The scale of the decline put pressure on one of Asia’s most important technology-heavy equity markets and intensified concerns about broader risk appetite.
The pressure extended beyond equities. According to CoinGlass data cited by CoinDesk, approximately $803 million in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated over a 24-hour period. Long positions represented around $694 million, or 86% of the total. This imbalance shows that traders betting on rising prices absorbed most of the forced closures. Liquidations can amplify volatility because positions are automatically closed as collateral becomes insufficient, adding market orders during already unstable conditions.
Bitcoin briefly slipped below $81,000 before rebounding above $83,000. That recovery matters, but it should not be mistaken for confirmation that the sell-off is over. A sharp bounce can reflect short covering and the exhaustion of forced selling rather than sustained spot demand. The next test is whether BTC can hold its recovery when liquidation pressure eases and normal trading liquidity returns.
One unusual detail was the activity in equity-linked perpetual futures. SanDisk contracts recorded approximately $19.09 million in liquidations, exceeding XRP’s reported $18.78 million. Contracts connected to SK hynix and Micron also appeared in the data. This illustrates how some crypto trading platforms now host leveraged exposure to traditional equities, allowing stress in technology shares to interact with crypto-native derivatives markets.
The transmission mechanism is straightforward, although it is not automatic. Falling equities can generate margin calls, reduce portfolio collateral and force investors to raise cash. If investors sell Bitcoin to meet those obligations, crypto prices may weaken even without a new crypto-specific shock. Meanwhile, falling prices can trigger additional liquidations among crypto traders, creating a second layer of selling pressure.
The broader backdrop makes the warning more significant. Concerns about semiconductor competition, expensive AI infrastructure and the financing required to sustain the technology investment cycle have challenged investor confidence. If traders begin reducing exposure across high-growth assets, crypto may face pressure from the same risk-off environment. Still, the timing of simultaneous declines does not prove that Korean equity losses caused every crypto liquidation.
The bullish case depends on Bitcoin stabilizing above the recent $81,000 area, spot buyers absorbing supply and open interest declining without another major price breakdown. A sustained recovery above $83,000 would be more convincing if accompanied by strong spot volume and healthier derivatives positioning.
The bearish case is a renewed equity decline followed by fresh margin calls, persistent long liquidations and weakening BTC support. If traders rebuild leveraged bullish positions too quickly while liquidity remains fragile, even a modest additional decline could trigger another cascade.
The indicators worth watching are Bitcoin spot volume, exchange netflows, total crypto open interest, funding rates, liquidation imbalances and Korean equity flows. Together, they can help reveal whether markets are simply clearing excessive leverage or entering a broader cross-asset risk reduction.
Tom Lee’s warning is therefore a risk signal, not proof of direct causation. The approximately $803 million liquidation event demonstrates substantial stress in leveraged crypto markets, while South Korea’s equity rout provides a plausible channel for additional pressure. The decisive question is whether fresh spot demand can absorb forced selling or whether another round of margin calls turns a stock-market correction into a wider liquidity shock.
