South Korean stocks are experiencing one of their most critical days. After wiping out $108 billion in market value with a 3.2% drop yesterday, the KOSPI index plunged below the 6,000 level this morning, October 13, 2026, falling over 6% and triggering its first sell-side trading curb in two months.
This is not a simple panic sell-off, but a collision of three macro factors at once. And precisely for that reason, when examined academically, it presents a clear opportunity: I am accumulating on dips in stages.
Let's look at the real data. Samsung Electronics traded down to 237,000 won intraday and is currently around 238,000 won, down 4.99% for the day. It had already fallen 4.4% yesterday. SK hynix saw a low of 1,507,000 won and is now at 1,509,000 won, down 5.98%, after a 4.52% drop yesterday. The spillover is broad: SK Square is down 7.77% to 907,500 won, Samsung Electro-Mechanics down 5.99%. Foreign investors sold a net 948.8 billion won on the main board in the morning session alone, while retail and institutional investors were net buyers of 493 billion and 383.8 billion won respectively. Overnight, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 2.67%, with Micron down 3.9% and SanDisk down 6.0%.
There are three reasons behind the plunge.
First, the China threat. Chinese memory maker Changxin Memory Technologies announced it will begin mass production of next-generation DRAM chips with reduced cell size this year. This has raised concerns about oversupply in the global memory market and is being priced as a risk to the dominance of Samsung and SK hynix. The critical nuance is that CXMT has not yet proven yield, performance, or customer certification for mass production. The threat is real, but its timing is uncertain.
Second, AI bubble concerns. Reports on October 8th that OpenAI's annual revenue was $20 billion lower than expected triggered a 3.39% drop in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. Investors are now questioning the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending. This is a direct demand question for HBM suppliers like SK hynix and Samsung.
Third, macro pressure ahead of the US CPI report and the Fed's October meeting, with rising US Treasury yields and surging oil prices driving risk-off.
Despite all this, I see this as a buying opportunity for three fundamental reasons.
Profits are breaking records while prices are falling. Samsung Electronics is forecasting record quarterly operating profit of around 12.4 trillion won driven by the AI-related memory shortage. When a company increases its profit and its share price drops, that is a classic valuation divergence. The market is pricing short-term fear and ignoring long-term earnings.
The HBM monopoly continues. More than 90% of the global HBM market is in the hands of SK hynix and Samsung. Demand for HBM3e and HBM4 for Nvidia's Blackwell and Rubin chips is fully sold out until 2027. It will take CXMT at least 2-3 years to reach this technology level. Short-term supply fears do not break the medium-term super cycle.
Technically, we are in extreme oversold territory. The RSI is at 28, KOSPI has broken the psychological 6,000 support where historically foreign selling peaks and local institutional buying begins. The 6,180-6,200 range is now strong resistance, while 5,850-5,900 has been a historical accumulation zone.
My strategy is not blind all-in, but selective and staged accumulation. My current stance is 30% buying, 70% cash waiting. For Samsung, first tranche in the 235,000-240,000 won range, second tranche if it dips to 225,000 won. For SK hynix, first tranche at 1.50-1.52 million won. I favor SK hynix over Samsung because it is a purer HBM play with higher margins. It was hit harder on the way down, and it typically recovers faster. If KOSPI breaks below 5,700, the thesis fails and I will cut the position. The key catalysts this week are ASML and TSMC earnings, which will resolve industry uncertainty. If they come in positive, today's drop can be reversed in a V-shaped recovery tomorrow.
As Buffett says, be greedy when others are fearful. Right now three fears are being priced at once: China, the AI bubble, and the Fed. But three facts remain on the table: record profits, an HBM monopoly, and extreme oversold conditions.
For me this is a short-term correction and a long-term accumulation opportunity. I am buying the dip.
What do you think? Will KOSPI stay below 6,000 or is this a bear trap?
