BTC is up 1.17% to around $83,855. That looks calm, but the liquidation data underneath tells a different story, and CPI is two days away. Here’s how I’m reading it.
1. This was a squeeze, not necessarily new demand
Liquidations hit about $710M, and $461M of that (65%) was shorts. When shorts get forced out, they have to buy back, and that pushes price up on its own. It’s forced buying, not conviction buying. What matters next is whether real buyers show up after the squeeze ends. If price gives it all back quickly, it was just a squeeze.
2. Sentiment is warming into a binary event
Fear & Greed rebounded to 69, which is in the greed zone. That index follows price, so it’s more of a mirror than a signal. But greedier positioning going into a macro print means bigger moves if the number surprises.
3. BTC daily chart (~83,860)
Resistance 86,288: about +2.9%
Pivot 83,149: about -0.8% (today’s low sat right on it)
Support 81,933: about -2.3%
50-day MA 81,072: about -3.3%
RSI ~52, MACD still below its signal line, though the histogram is a little less negative than on my last chart
So the range is still 81,933 to 86,288. Nothing has broken in either direction.
4. Altcoins haven’t confirmed the move
ETH ~2,539 is still just under its 50-day (2,558). SOL ~110.7 is sitting right on its 50-day (109.2). XRP ~1.397 is below its 50-day (1.429). RSI on all three is in the 44-46 zone. Only NEAR (RSI ~63) looks strong, but today’s candle shows a wick up to 6.01 and a close lower, so even that has some rejection. A BTC-led squeeze with lagging alts isn’t a broad risk-on move yet.
5. CPI on Oct 14
It’s released at 8:30 ET. One preview puts consensus near 3.7% y/y, after 3.4% for August, and early-October nowcasts pointed to roughly +0.5% m/m headline and +0.2% core. Energy is the driver (US diesel averaged about $6.29 in September), and the Fed debate this autumn is about whether to hike, with the decision on Oct 28. So a hotter print raises hike odds and is bad for risk assets. A cooler one could be a relief.
My plan:
Hot print: I watch 83,149 first, then 81,933
Cool print: I want a daily close above 86,288, not just a wick. Some reports flag a cluster of liquidations above 87,300 that could add fuel
Until then, I’m not chasing a squeeze into a binary event, and I’m keeping size small
Not financial advice.
Do you think this squeeze holds into CPI, or fades before the print? And where’s your line: 83,149, 81,933, or 86,288?
