KOSPI is down 3%+ intraday, led by Samsung and SK Hynix. Everyone is asking “buy the dip?” Here’s how I’m thinking about it, and why I’m not rushing.
1. This isn’t the first big chip drop this year
On June 24, Samsung fell about 12% and SK Hynix about 12.5% in one session, their worst days since 2008. By Aug 19, both had dropped again: Samsung closed at 247,500 won and SK Hynix at around 1.5 million won. Compare that to the June 24 closes (310,000 and 2.555 million): that’s roughly -20% for Samsung and about -40% for SK Hynix. If you bought the first dip in June, you were down another 20 to 40% two months later. That’s why “it’s a dip” is not a plan.
2. KOSPI is basically a two-stock bet
One report puts Samsung and SK Hynix at close to 60% of the index. So “buying the KOSPI dip” means buying two memory chip names. That’s a concentrated AI-cycle trade, not a diversified Korea trade.
3. Pullback or reversal? What I’d want to see
Foreign selling slows. Earlier this year foreigners sold for 20 straight sessions, so a streak can last a long time.
US chip leaders stabilize. Korean chips tend to follow the US semiconductor move.
AI demand holds up in guidance. ASML reports Oct 14 and TSMC Oct 15. Those are the nearest real tests of the AI supply chain story.
A closing-basis hold above the last major low, not just an intraday bounce.
4. My answer to the poll
Today I’m on the sidelines. If I were going to buy, I’d split it into three parts: a small starter only after the ASML and TSMC prints, then add only if the chip leaders stabilize and foreign selling fades. No full-size entry into falling momentum. I’m not saying the move is over, I’m saying one down day tells me very little.
5. Why crypto people should watch it
I treat this as a risk-appetite gauge. If AI and semiconductor names keep wobbling, it can spill into other risk assets. It doesn’t decide BTC’s direction, but it’s a useful sentiment check next to the BTC chart.
Not financial advice.
Are you buying this dip or waiting for ASML and TSMC? And what’s the one signal that would make you click buy?
