A 14% drop gets people shouting “crash” or “buy the dip” within seconds. I’d rather do an autopsy of the candle first. Here are five clues from my daily chart, and then what I’d actually do.
The numbers behind the headline
The 24h high was 1,292 and the low was 1,113, a drop of about 13.9%. Price is now about 1,224, so it has bounced exactly 10% off the low and sits about 5% under the high. Zoom out and the picture changes: ZEC rallied from about 467 to a high near 1,696, which is more than 3.6 times, and it’s now about 28% below that top. So this is a big pullback after a near-vertical run, not a trend that was dead a week ago.
Clue 1: the wick
The candle has a long lower wick. Price dove to 1,113 and buyers pushed it back up about 10%. A long wick means someone defended that area. But the day isn’t over, so I treat it as a hint, not a result.
Clue 2: the EMA50 reclaim
The daily EMA50 sits at 1,185. The wick pierced well below it and price is now back above it. That’s the first thing a trend-follower wants to see after a flush: a dip below the line that gets taken back. If the daily candle closes above 1,185, that’s a small win for the bulls.
Clue 3: the 38.2% retracement
Take the whole rally from 467 to 1,696. The 38.2% pullback level lands near 1,226, and price is sitting at 1,224. That’s a textbook pause point, and a reason the bounce started exactly here. The next retrace levels are about 1,081 (50%) and about 936 (61.8%), and the EMA99 at 967 sits right near the second one.
Clue 4: the daily MACD
The MACD has crossed down: DIF is about 11 and DEA is about 58, with a negative histogram, and DIF is almost at the zero line. Translation: momentum has rolled over and is close to flipping negative. That tells me the bounce is more of a relief than a new trend, until proven otherwise.
Clue 5: the volume (not enough data yet)
Today’s volume so far is about 8.9K, against about 15.4K on the 5-day average and 13.8K on the 10-day. The day isn’t finished, so I’m not reading anything into it yet. I’ll check it after the daily close. If a big red candle on rising volume is followed by lighter volume while price holds, that usually helps the bulls.
What I think happened (and what I don’t know)
From what I’ve seen this past week, ZEC dropped in steps, with long liquidations along the way, after nearly doubling in September. That’s a classic crowded-long unwind. I can’t prove that today’s 14% was the same story, and I won’t pretend to.
The macro layer (the admin’s questions)
CPI is on Oct 14 and the Fed decides on Oct 28. Hike expectations are mostly priced in, but a hot CPI is not, and high-flyers like ZEC usually feel that first. So I’m sizing smaller than the chart would normally let me.
The ladder
Ceilings: 1,292 (the 24h high), 1,322 to 1,345 and 1,410 to 1,445 (zones from my earlier chart), and 1,683 to 1,696 (the peak)
Floors: 1,185 (EMA50), about 1,168 (the dotted support on my chart), 1,113 (24h low), 1,081 (50%), 967 (EMA99), 936 (61.8%)
My plans (my own view, not advice)
Plan A, buy the EMA50 zone:
Entry: 1,185 to 1,170
Stop loss: 4H close below 1,100
TP1: 1,292, roughly 1.5R
TP2: 1,410, roughly 3R
TP3: 1,683, roughly 6.5R
Plan B, only on a reclaim:
Condition: daily close above 1,345
Entry: retest of 1,345 to 1,330
Stop loss: below 1,285
TP1: 1,445, roughly 2R
TP2: 1,683, roughly 6.5R
Plan C, if 1,100 breaks:
I step aside. If I buy, I use the ladder: 1,085 to 1,000, stop below 955, TP1 1,185, TP2 1,292
Short idea: a failed retest of 1,150 to 1,170 after the break, stop above 1,200, TP1 1,081, TP2 1,000
ZEC moves like this on normal weeks, so I use small size, low leverage and orders at levels. A coin that can drop 14% in a day deserves a smaller position than the chart tempts me to take.
My check-in
Calm, light positions, spot untouched, cash kept aside on purpose. I’d rather be early to a level than late to a candle.
Verdict: a healthy-looking bounce on a tired momentum picture. Not a bottom call, not a crash call. What would you need to see before buying ZEC here?
