Bitcoin & Ethereum: Opportunity or Trap?

Bitcoin broke above nearly $87,400 on September 21–22, 2026—the highest since January—then retreated to the $83,000–84,400 range. Ethereum briefly neared $2,800 and is now at $2,650–2,740. After a sustained rally, the market is divided: a healthy pause or the start of a deeper correction?

What happened

The rebound began from the $75,000–76,000 area, broke through the $80,000 zone, and then reached a local high of $87,300–87,400. Ethereum also rose, with a sharper percentage gain. The main driver was US spot ETF inflows, one of the strongest weeks of 2026, with weekly inflows of around $2.3–2.4 billion. This was not merely short covering.

However, momentum did not last. The 10-year US Treasury yield touched ~5.25% (the highest since 2007), the dollar strengthened, and expectations remained that the Fed would stay tight. Quarterly pressure plus profit-taking pushed prices back to $82,500–84,000.

Two camps

Constructive: The medium-term trend structure remains intact. Key support lies at $80,000–82,000, the average cost-basis zone for ETF holders. As long as it holds and ETF inflows do not reverse, a 5% retracement after a 10% rally is merely a cooldown. The target is $88,000–90,000 if $87,000 is broken with volume.

Cautious: The rally was too fast, derivatives leverage has increased, and the macro environment remains unfavorable. If $80,000–82,000 breaks, room toward $77,000–78,000 opens up. Failure to retake $87,400 could signal weakness.

Ethereum is similar: support at $2,600–2,650, resistance at $2,800. Losing support opens the way to $2,500 and then $2,400.

So, an entry opportunity?

It depends on your horizon and discipline—not the “buy the dip” slogan.

For medium-term investors, a pullback to a tested support zone is often more rational than buying at the peak of euphoria. Still-positive ETF inflows indicate that institutional demand has not disappeared.

But an opportunity is not permission to go all-in. Three practical conditions:

1. Support confirmation—buy in stages only if the price holds above $80,000–82,000, not after it breaks down.
2. Position sizing—crypto volatility remains high; an allocation that damages the portfolio is not a strategy.
3. The next catalyst—PCE data, payrolls, and the direction of yields will determine whether the institutional bid holds.

Healthy correction: volume eases during the decline, funding rates normalize, and spot demand absorbs selling.
Dangerous correction: consecutive ETF outflows, a sharp rise in the dollar and yields, and a breakdown in the daily structure.

The market is still in a gray zone.

Important note

Bitcoin and Ethereum have proven capable of rebounding from the pressures of 2026, but both remain far below their previous cycle highs. The data is mixed: ETF demand is real, but macro liquidity has not loosened. “Opportunity” does not mean prices are certain to rise; it means the risk-reward profile in the support zone is more measurable than at $87,000, provided there is an exit plan if support fails.

Not investment advice. Crypto can move extremely sharply. Decisions should be based on risk profile, time horizon, and independent research.

Personally, I’m waiting for the funding rate to normalize before entering. The important thing is to have an exit plan if support fails.

The $80k-$82k support zone is crucial; if it breaks, it could indeed fall to $77k. But if it holds, the target $90k is still on the table.

ETF inflows are still solid, but this 5.25% yield is a warning sign. I’ll stay on the sidelines for now and watch next week’s PCE.
