ETH Clears $2,700, My Honest Take on Whether This Has Legs

ETH pushed above 2,700 today before easing back a bit, currently sitting around 2,667, up 3.51 percent, with the day's high at 2,707 and low at 2,568. That's a genuinely solid intraday range, and the move is happening alongside reported ETF inflows and a wave of short liquidations, which is a combination that's driven several of ETH's sharpest rallies over the past year or so.

Here's how I'm actually thinking about whether this is a catch-up move or something bigger. ETH has lagged BTC for most of this recent recovery. BTC already reclaimed its 50-week moving average and pushed back above 80,000 well before ETH managed to clear 2,700. When ETH finally starts moving after sitting behind BTC's rally, that's a pattern worth paying attention to, it often means capital that already rotated into BTC is now looking for the next leg of exposure, and ETH is the obvious next stop given its size and liquidity.

The short liquidation piece matters here too, and it's worth understanding why rather than just noting it happened. When ETH breaks a level that a lot of short positions were leaning against, those shorts get forced to buy back in to close their positions, and that buying adds fuel on top of whatever organic demand is already pushing price up. This is exactly the kind of self-reinforcing move that can run further and faster than the underlying demand alone would suggest, but it's also the kind of move that can stall out quickly once the bulk of vulnerable short positions have already been cleared out. So part of what's happening here is real, and part of it is mechanical, and it's genuinely hard to know from the outside exactly what the split is.

On ETF inflows specifically, I'd want to see this sustained over several days rather than treating one strong reading as confirmation of a bigger trend. ETH ETF flows have been choppy this year, strong weeks followed by weaker ones, so a single inflow day lining up with a price breakout is encouraging but not something I'd bet heavily on continuing without more confirmation.

Is 2,800 the next target? Based on where resistance has clustered recently, that's a reasonable level to watch, but I wouldn't get too attached to round numbers as the thing that matters. What I actually care about is whether ETH holds above 2,700 on a retest after this initial push, rather than whether it touches 2,800 briefly. A level that gets reclaimed and then immediately lost again is a weaker signal than one that gets tested from above and holds as new support.

For positioning, I'm not chasing this move at the highs of today's range. If ETH pulls back toward the 2,600 to 2,650 zone and holds there with decent volume, that retest holding is the setup I'd actually want to see before adding exposure, rather than buying directly into a day that's already up 3.5 percent with a lot of forced short covering baked into the move. If it fails to hold anywhere near current levels and slides back toward 2,568 or lower, I'd read that as this being more of a short-covering spike than a genuine trend shift.

The bigger context I keep coming back to is that this is all happening while BTC is testing its own key resistance around 82,000 to 83,000. If BTC breaks through there, I'd expect ETH's move here to have real room to extend, since a confirmed BTC breakout tends to pull the rest of the market along with it. If BTC gets rejected at that level, ETH's current strength becomes a lot more vulnerable to reversing along with everything else.

Not financial advice. Always do your own research before making any trading or investment decision.

Here is the question for discussion: are you treating this as ETH finally catching up to BTC's strength, or does the short liquidation angle make you think part of this move is more mechanical than it looks on the surface?
