Altera has officially confirmed a confidential S-1 submission for a proposed U.S. IPO. The share count and price range have not yet been determined, and the offering remains subject to SEC review and market conditions. Reuters reports that the company could seek to raise more than $2 billion, although the timing and size can still change.
Altera is stepping closer to the public markets after its parent company confidentially submitted a draft registration statement on Form S-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering.
This development puts another major semiconductor name into the spotlight at a time when investors are closely watching the enormous demand for AI infrastructure and advanced computing.
Altera is a programmable-chip company whose technology is used across data centers, telecommunications networks, industrial systems, AI applications, and other advanced computing environments. Its FPGA technology can complement traditional processors and GPUs by providing flexible, programmable computing and connectivity capabilities.
The IPO filing is particularly interesting because Altera sits at the intersection of several major technology trends: artificial intelligence, data-center expansion, high-performance computing, networking, industrial automation, and the broader semiconductor industry.
According to Altera's announcement, the company has not yet determined the number of shares to be offered or the price range. The proposed offering must also go through the SEC review process and remains dependent on market conditions.
Reports have previously indicated that the offering could potentially raise more than $2 billion, although the final size and timing remain subject to change. If that target is reached, the deal could become one of the larger semiconductor IPOs in recent years.
Altera's ownership history also makes the story notable. Intel acquired Altera in 2015 for approximately $16.7 billion. In 2025, Altera became a standalone company again after Silver Lake acquired a 51% stake from Intel, leaving Intel with a significant minority position.
Now, the potential public listing creates a new opportunity for investors to evaluate Altera as a standalone semiconductor business.
The bigger question will be how public-market investors value its exposure to AI infrastructure.
AI development requires much more than GPUs. Data centers also need networking, connectivity, programmable logic, specialized computing, power infrastructure, storage, and other components. Altera's position in programmable chips gives investors another way to examine the expanding semiconductor ecosystem around AI.
At the same time, an IPO does not guarantee a particular valuation or market performance. Investors will likely examine revenue growth, profitability, customer concentration, AI-related demand, competition, capital requirements, and the company's ability to maintain growth as semiconductor markets evolve.
The confidential filing is therefore an important milestone, but it is only one step in the IPO process.
As more information becomes available through the eventual public filing, investors will have a clearer opportunity to study Altera's financial performance, business strategy, risks, and growth plans.
The semiconductor IPO pipeline is becoming increasingly interesting, and Altera's filing adds another major technology company to that story.
The combination of programmable computing, AI infrastructure, data-center expansion, and semiconductor demand makes this IPO one to watch as the company moves toward the next stage of its corporate journey.
