Against this backdrop, reports that Singapore’s state investment company Temasek is considering a direct investment in SK hynix have attracted significant market attention, particularly as SK hynix evaluates a potential new memory-chip manufacturing facility in Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture.

Production Strategy
SK hynix is expanding production capacity across several locations to respond to the structural increase in AI-memory demand. In August, the company announced approximately 54 trillion won of investment for new DRAM and NAND facilities in Yongin and Cheongju, demonstrating the scale of its broader capacity expansion.

The company is also developing its U.S. manufacturing footprint. Its Indiana project represents a roughly $4 billion investment, with mass production of advanced HBM4E expected by the third quarter of 2029 and annual capacity planned at hundreds of thousands of wafers.
This global production strategy shows that SK hynix is not relying on one factory or one geographic market. Instead, it is building a diversified semiconductor supply chain capable of supporting AI infrastructure growth.

Why Japan Matters
A Japanese facility could provide SK hynix with several strategic advantages. Japan has a sophisticated semiconductor ecosystem, advanced equipment suppliers, engineering talent and strong government support for domestic chip production.
