#每周来晒 SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics (Samsung) are both global leaders in memory chips, especially HBM. Both offer very high investment value, but their investment logic and risk-return profiles differ significantly, making them suitable for investors with different risk appetites.
I. SK Hynix: High elasticity, high growth, and relatively “cheap” valuation
1. Core strengths and investment logic
Absolute HBM leader: It holds an absolute leading position in AI high-bandwidth memory (HBM), with a market share of approximately 50%-58%. It is deeply tied to leading AI customers such as NVIDIA, giving it extremely strong pricing power and earnings elasticity.
High earnings and profit-margin elasticity: Its business structure is relatively focused, without the drag from foundry and consumer electronics businesses. HBM’s high profit margins directly enhance overall earnings elasticity, giving it strong earnings growth potential.
Relatively reasonable valuation: Compared with Samsung, SK Hynix has a relatively lower forward price-to-earnings ratio (PE) of approximately 5-7x. Amid the strong AI memory cycle, it has considerable room for valuation recovery and re-rating.
2. Risks and disadvantages
High volatility: As a high-beta AI concept stock, it is extremely sensitive to fluctuations in capital expenditure on AI computing power and changes in HBM supply and demand. Its volatility can be significant during pullbacks.
Competition and capacity-expansion risks: Accelerated catch-up by competitors such as Samsung in the HBM field could weaken its market-share advantage. The capital expenditure pressure and potential dilution risks arising from large-scale capacity expansion also warrant attention.
II. Samsung Electronics: High stability, strong risk resistance, and relatively “reasonable” valuation
1. Core strengths and investment logic
Strong overall risk resistance: Samsung has enormous scale and diversified businesses spanning memory, smartphones, displays, foundry services, and more. Profits from non-memory businesses can smooth fluctuations in the memory cycle, giving it extremely strong risk resistance.
HBM catch-up and stable earnings: Samsung is accelerating its catch-up in HBM, having already mass-produced and shipped HBM4. Combined with the cyclical recovery of traditional memory products such as DRAM and NAND, this supports stable and highly predictable earnings.
Room for valuation recovery: Although its overall valuation (PE) is not low relative to SK Hynix, successful progress in catching up in HBM could bring a “double boost” from both earnings and valuation.
2. Risks and disadvantages
Relatively limited earnings elasticity: Its large scale means that earnings growth is relatively slower than SK Hynix’s, making it difficult to fully replicate SK Hynix’s explosive growth.
Risk of drag from non-memory businesses: If traditional businesses such as smartphones and displays experience declining profit margins or market-share losses, they could partially offset the growth benefits of the memory business.
III. Investment recommendations
Investors seeking high elasticity and high growth who can tolerate high volatility: Consider SK Hynix. It is suitable for seeking high-growth returns and valuation re-rating during a strong AI memory cycle. Staggered buying on pullbacks is recommended.
Investors seeking stability and strong risk resistance who prefer low volatility: Consider Samsung Electronics. It is suitable as a core holding to share in the benefits of the recovery of the AI memory cycle and the stable growth of Samsung’s diversified businesses.

The semiconductor industry is highly cyclical. The above analysis is based on current AI computing-power demand and industry supply and demand. Investments should be made in consideration of individual risk tolerance, with attention paid to position sizing. $SK Hynix
