September 15 — Ethlabs developer Derek Chiang said that collaboration on account abstraction around EIP-8130 and EIP-8141 (framework transactions) ended last week, with Ethereum and Base advancing different standards separately.
The two sides had originally planned to establish a unified solution applicable to L1 and L2, providing a consistent cross-chain experience for gasless transactions, passkey wallets, and future quantum-resistant accounts.
Chiang noted that Ethereum L1 places greater emphasis on censorship resistance, privacy, security, and quantum resistance, requiring support for signature aggregation, privacy protocols, and transaction types for freely programmable accounts, leading to proposals such as ERC-4337, EIP-7701, and EIP-8141. L2s such as Base, however, focus more on scalability, customization, and compliance, hoping that protocols can identify and restrict specific accounts and transaction types, and have therefore proposed standards such as EIP-8130.
Although the two sides identified multiple technical solutions, all required at least one party to compromise on its core objectives. They ultimately chose to develop separately, shifting responsibility for compatibility with different standards to wallet and application developers. Chiang believes that an EVM coordination mechanism covering more L1 and L2 participants could be established in the future, or that the standards could be allowed to diverge, with wallets and applications hiding the underlying differences; he currently favors the latter path.$ETH
