It means not bullying the weak when you have the ability to do so; knowing which money should not be made when faced with temptation; remaining neither servile nor arrogant before the powerful; showing respect to the weak; being willing to bear the consequences of promises you have made; being able to concede defeat with dignity, and not humiliating others even when you win; and maintaining your own principles even when no one is watching. It also includes something very important: a sense of responsibility. People who truly possess power, wealth, knowledge, and resources understand that these things also entail responsibility, rather than merely allowing them to enjoy and demand more for themselves. So the core of the spirit of nobility is not a “noble way of life,” but honor, restraint, responsibility, courage, independence, and the long-term discipline of one’s own conduct. A person can be very poor yet possess great nobility of spirit; another can be extremely wealthy yet radiate the air of a nouveau riche. Ultimately, the spirit of nobility is not judged by what you possess, but by this: when you have the power to choose, what kind of person do you choose to become?
