#GateEventPointsTop100 Solana Shipped an Upgrade Today While Holding the Most Crowded Long on the Board
Solana is doing something unusual this week: the network is shipping, and the token is barely moving. SOL trades near $104, up 4.4% in 24 hours but up just 0.09% over the full week. That mismatch between improving fundamentals and flat price is the most interesting setup on the board right now.
WHAT SHIPPED TODAY
The second step of the SIMD-0437 rent reduction goes live on mainnet today at roughly 21:15 UTC, in epoch 1033. Rent per byte drops from 6,333 lamports to 5,080 lamports - a cumulative reduction of about 27% from the original level. In plain terms, deposits required to create token accounts and on-chain storage get cheaper, lowering the cost of building on Solana. Three more steps remain in the five-step plan, and step three has no fixed date because it waits for on-chain state growth to be confirmed as safe. A fallback proposal, SIMD-0438, exists to roll the parameters back if something breaks. That is a careful, staged rollout with a brake pedal, which is exactly how a rent change should ship.
THE DEMAND SIDE IS NOT THE ISSUE
Solana processed about $2.95B of DEX volume over the last 24 hours, ranking first across all chains. Robinhood Chain followed at about $1.92B and Ethereum at about $1.42B. Whatever you think about Solana's price, the execution layer is still where a large share of on-chain trading happens. There is also a client-level story forming: the Firedancer team plans to stop maintaining Frankendancer, the transitional validator client, once Alpenglow activates on mainnet, currently expected with v4.3 in October. Consolidating onto the full Firedancer client reduces maintenance surface but concentrates attention on one implementation path.
WHERE THE RISK ACTUALLY SITS: POSITIONING
Here is the uncomfortable part. Long/short positioning on SOL futures is near 1.91, the most crowded of the three majors - far above BTC near 1.15 and ETH near 1.42. At the same time, open interest near $6.06B is down about 2.9% over 24 hours, and the taker buy/sell ratio sits at 0.97, meaning sellers have been marginally more aggressive than buyers. Crowded longs plus falling open interest plus flat weekly price is a combination that historically resolves through a flush rather than a grind higher.
TECHNICAL READ
The 1-hour structure is constructive: RSI near 63.6, ADX above 40, and a positive directional index that dominates the negative one. Price is trading above the 1-hour upper Bollinger band near $100.8, which means the short-term move is stretched. Strong ADX with a stretched price is not a buying signal - it is a warning that the fuel is being spent. The weekly flatness is the real tell: buyers have had a full week of news flow and have not been able to push the weekly candle meaningfully positive.
HOW I AM FRAMING IT
Two paths. If SOL holds above the $100 handle and open interest expands while the weekly candle finally turns green, the fundamental improvements and the crowded long can coexist - positioning gets absorbed instead of punished. If price loses $100 with open interest still falling, the 1.91 long/short ratio becomes the trade, and the flush points lower. Fundamentals decide where a network goes over years. Positioning and open interest decide whether you survive the next two weeks, and right now they disagree with each other.
That tension is exactly why Event Points reward consistency rather than conviction. The Top 100 across the first three rounds were not the loudest participants - they were the ones who managed size on weeks like this one, with a stale upgrade story on one side and a crowded futures book on the other. If you placed in the Event Points Top 100 in any of the first three rounds, post your ranking screenshot next to a real market read like this instead of a screenshot alone. @Gate_Square
