August PPI came in at 5.4 percent year-over-year, hotter than expected and up from the previous month. The monthly reading also moved higher, with energy and goods contributing to the increase. The data adds another firm inflation print after the recent jobs numbers and keeps the focus tightly on the next release.

CPI is the immediate next test. Markets will use it to update the path for policy and risk assets. A cooler number could ease some of the pressure that has built on rate expectations. A hotter number would reinforce the idea that inflation remains sticky and keep the higher-for-longer narrative in place.

BTC, gold and U.S. stocks are all sensitive to the same data, but they do not always move in the same direction on the day. BTC often reacts first to liquidity and risk sentiment. Gold tends to respond to real-rate expectations. Equity indices balance growth signals against the discount-rate impact. The order of reaction can matter as much as the direction.

I am treating the PPI print as a reminder that the inflation path is still not fully settled. Positioning ahead of CPI carries the usual event risk. Waiting for the number removes some uncertainty but can mean missing the initial move. Either approach requires clear invalidation levels and measured size.

The practical question is simple. After a hotter PPI, do you lean into the data or stay on the sidelines until CPI is released. The answer depends on how much weight you give the producer side as a leading signal for consumer prices.

Curious how others are setting up. Are you trading the PPI reaction into CPI, or waiting for the consumer print before adjusting exposure. Share your framing.
