According to Bank of America's client fund flow data, approximately $7 billion in net inflows into US equities was recorded last week. This marks the sixth-largest weekly net inflow since the bank began compiling weekly data in 2008.
Fund Flow Details
· Equities: Approximately $3.9 billion in net buying
· Equity ETFs: Approximately $3.1 billion in net buying
· Total net inflow: Approximately $7 billion
This represents the second consecutive week of net buying and signals the strongest level of inflows since mid-July.
Breakdown by Investor Type
While institutional investors and hedge funds led the buying, retail clients remained net sellers for the sixth consecutive week. Institutional investors recorded net purchases of approximately $5.8 billion, while hedge funds bought approximately $4.0 billion.
Sector Outlook
Net inflows were observed in eight of the S&P 500's 11 major sectors. The technology sector stood out by attracting inflows for the second straight week, drawing in approximately $2.1 billion. The financial sector saw inflows of approximately $907 million. Conversely, the industrial sector experienced the largest capital outflow—shedding approximately $1.1 billion—and saw selling for the fifth consecutive week.
Market Context
During the week in question, the S&P 500 Index rose by only 0.1%. This indicates that the substantial fund inflow did not occur against the backdrop of a significant market rally. Data indicate that institutional investors are gravitating toward large- and mid-cap stocks, while the trend of selling persists in small-cap stocks.
Assessment Note
The weekly net inflow of $7 billion ranks sixth in the series tracked since 2008. The fact that buying by institutional investors and hedge funds coincided with selling by individual investors reflects the divergence in positioning between these investor groups. Data alone do not provide a basis for predicting market direction; the continuity of these flows in the coming weeks is the key variable to monitor.
