Gate Is Bringing US Stock Options Closer to Crypto Trading
Gate has officially launched U.S. stock options trading, opening with nine major names: NVIDIA, Tesla, Apple, Meta, AMD, Micron, Amazon, Alphabet and Broadcom. The launch went live on September 2 and allows eligible users to access calls and puts directly through Gate during regular U.S. market hours.
The Important Difference Is Settlement
These are not conventional share-delivery options. Positions are settled in USDT, meaning exercising an option does not result in receiving the underlying stock. Gate says settlement is based on the average underlying stock price during the approximately 30-minute period before the official market close.
Why USDT Settlement Matters
For crypto-native traders, this creates a familiar funding and settlement experience. Instead of moving between a crypto account and a traditional brokerage account, eligible users can keep their trading capital in USDT and use it for exposure to major U.S. equities. The product therefore focuses on price exposure rather than ownership of the underlying shares.
The First Nine Stocks Are a Strategic Choice
The initial lineup is not random. NVIDIA, Tesla, Apple, Meta, AMD, Micron, Amazon, Alphabet and Broadcom are among the companies that attract enormous attention from both technology investors and active traders. Starting with highly liquid, recognizable names gives the product an immediate connection to some of the most actively followed areas of the U.S. market.
Options Add a Different Trading Layer
Spot stock exposure and options serve different purposes. A call can provide bullish exposure, while a put can provide bearish exposure or potentially be used as a hedge. But options also introduce additional risks such as expiration, time decay and changes in implied volatility. That makes understanding the contract structure more important than simply predicting whether a stock will rise or fall.
The Cost Structure Is Also Notable
Gate says the initial product carries no platform or options commission, while applicable regulatory and clearing fees still apply. This can lower the friction of entering a position, but lower trading fees do not remove the underlying risks of leveraged or time-sensitive derivatives.
This Fits Into a Larger Strategy
The options launch looks more significant when viewed alongside Gate's expansion into traditional-market products. The direction is becoming clear: bring crypto liquidity, stablecoin settlement and access to traditional assets closer together inside one trading environment.
But Convenience Should Not Be Confused With Simplicity
The biggest misconception would be treating these products exactly like holding shares. A stock can theoretically be held indefinitely, while an option has a defined expiration and its value can change rapidly even when the underlying stock moves only modestly. Traders need to understand strike price, expiration, premium, volatility and settlement mechanics before taking a position.
The Bigger Market Signal
I think the interesting part is the convergence happening between two previously separate trading environments. Crypto platforms are increasingly adding exposure to stocks, ETFs and derivatives, while traditional financial markets are becoming more comfortable with digital settlement infrastructure.
What Comes Next
Gate says it plans to expand the stock-options offering over time. If more stocks and ETFs are added, the bigger opportunity could be building a broader multi-asset trading environment where crypto, equities and derivatives can be accessed through the same account structure.
My Take
The launch is less about nine individual stocks and more about the direction of the market.
USDT settlement, direct access through a crypto platform and traditional equity options in the same environment represent another step toward the convergence of crypto and traditional finance.
The real test now is adoption.
If traders find the combination of stablecoin funding + U.S. equity exposure + options useful, this could become much bigger than an initial nine-stock rollout.
The boundary between crypto markets and traditional markets is getting thinner.
