KIMI IPO JOURNEY IS GETTING REAL — BUT INVESTORS NEED TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES

Moonshot AI, the company behind Kimi, is reportedly moving closer to a Hong Kong IPO, and the phrase “confidential filing” is attracting major attention.

But let’s clear up one important point: a confidential IPO filing does not mean Moonshot AI is already publicly listed, its shares are trading, or the Hong Kong listing has been approved.

Instead, it gives the company an opportunity to work privately with regulators before entering the full public process. Reports suggest Moonshot is targeting an official Hong Kong application by the end of September 2026, with a potential IPO debut around Q4 2026 or Q1 2027.

And the valuation story is extraordinary.

Moonshot was valued at roughly $4.3 billion in December 2025. That figure jumped to around $10 billion in January 2026, approximately $20 billion in May, and then reached about $35 billion after its $3.5 billion Series F in July.

That represents an almost 8x increase in valuation in less than a year.

Now comes the number that could completely change the IPO conversation: reports suggest Moonshot has discussed another pre-IPO financing round at a valuation of up to $50 billion.

At that level, investors would not simply be buying into today’s Kimi business. They would be paying for expectations of massive future growth.

🔥 THE K3 EFFECT

One of the biggest catalysts behind Moonshot’s rapid repricing has been Kimi K3, launched in July.

The model reportedly features a massive 2.8-trillion-parameter architecture, a mixture-of-experts design and a one-million-token context window. Its performance and open-weight strategy generated significant global attention and once again raised the question of whether Chinese AI companies can achieve frontier-level capabilities with substantially different cost structures.

That matters because the implications go far beyond Moonshot.

If increasingly capable models can be developed and deployed more efficiently, investors may start questioning the enormous capital requirements currently associated with GPUs, data centers and AI infrastructure.

📈 REVENUE IS GROWING — BUT SO IS THE VALUATION RISK

Moonshot’s reported annualised recurring revenue has reportedly climbed from around $100 million in March to $200 million in April and approximately $300 million by June.

That growth is impressive.

But against a $35 billion valuation, $300 million of annualised revenue implies a valuation of more than 100x revenue.

At a potential $50 billion valuation, the multiple approaches 167x.

Even if revenue eventually reaches $500 million, investors would still be paying roughly 100x revenue at a $50 billion valuation.

That means the IPO will depend heavily on future expectations, not just current financial performance.

🚀 THE BULL CASE

Moonshot has several powerful advantages:

• Kimi has established significant brand recognition
• K3 has strengthened its frontier-AI positioning
• Revenue appears to be accelerating rapidly
• Open-weight distribution could expand global adoption
• Strategic Chinese investors are reportedly involved
• The company appears to be restructuring for a potential listing
• Major investment banks are reportedly participating
• Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud revenue-sharing discussions could create major enterprise distribution channels

If those cloud relationships translate into sustainable enterprise revenue, Moonshot could evolve from a consumer AI company into a much broader model and AI infrastructure business.

⚠️ BUT THE RISKS ARE HUGE

A 100x+ revenue valuation leaves very little room for disappointment.

Moonshot faces aggressive competition from DeepSeek, Qwen, Doubao and Tencent’s Yuanbao. AI model pricing is also becoming increasingly competitive, creating pressure on margins.

There are infrastructure challenges as well. Strong K3 demand has reportedly created compute-capacity pressure, while US semiconductor restrictions add another layer of difficulty for Chinese AI companies.

Geopolitical tensions could also complicate access to US capital and relationships with major American cloud providers.

Hong Kong market conditions are another variable. Investors may remain excited about AI while becoming increasingly selective about extremely high valuations.

🎯 MY TAKE

Moonshot AI could become one of the most important Chinese technology IPO stories of this cycle.

But I would separate the technology from the valuation.

Kimi’s technology is significant. Revenue growth is impressive. K3 has clearly changed the conversation around Moonshot.

However, $35 billion already requires exceptional execution. A $50 billion valuation would require something close to flawless execution.

Before becoming aggressively bullish, I would watch three things:

1️⃣ The official HKEX filing
2️⃣ Whether the reported $300 million ARR continues accelerating after the initial K3 excitement
3️⃣ Whether Microsoft, AWS and Google partnerships generate sustainable enterprise revenue

For retail investors, Gate’s KIMI Pre-IPO products may offer exposure through mirror-note structures, but these are not actual Moonshot shares and may carry cancellation, liquidity and profit-sharing risks.

The biggest mistake would be buying the story simply because a headline says “$50 billion valuation.”

In AI, the technology can be extraordinary — and the valuation can still be too expensive.
