GoPro has experienced a rebirth after a long period of decline. In the last two trading days, its stock has gained approximately 170%, attracting significant investor attention. So what's behind this extraordinary surge?

New Major Shareholder: Markiplier

The initial spark was Mark Fischbach (Markiplier), one of YouTube's biggest content creators. The popular streamer became the company's largest individual shareholder by purchasing an 8.5% stake in GoPro. Fischbach explained his move by saying the stock "looked cheap," adding that he wanted to see the company recover. This move by the YouTuber, who has nearly 40 million subscribers, sparked a wave of interest, particularly among retail investors.

Surprise Merger with Starman Optical

The second, and perhaps more strategic, leg of the surge was GoPro's decision to merge with Starman Optical, a privately held photonics company. This $285 million deal involves paying GoPro shareholders $1.14 per share in cash and retaining approximately 10% of the shares in the new company. This move shifts GoPro away from consumer cameras and into an entirely new and high-growth area: the production of 800G/1.6T optical transceivers for AI data centers. This new direction will put the company in direct competition with optical module manufacturer AAOI.

Financial Challenges and the Sale Process

These exciting developments are built upon GoPro's challenging financial record. In the second quarter of 2026, the company's revenue fell 31% year-over-year to $104.9 million, resulting in a net loss of $51 million. This financial difficulty was further highlighted by PwC's announcement that GoPro had "significant doubts about its going concern." Amidst all this, company founder Nicholas Woodman announced that the company sale evaluation process, initiated in May, had reached its "final stage."

Short Squeeze

Another significant driving force behind this strong and rapid rise is the short squeeze. In GoPro, which had been in a long-term downtrend, the short selling rate had risen to 16%. The sudden price increase forced sellers to close their short positions, creating additional buying pressure on the stock and further fueling the rise.
