Anthropic's $35 Billion Lambda Deal: A New Era in the AI Infrastructure War

Anthropic has signed a new $35 billion computing deal with Nvidia-backed cloud provider Lambda to rapidly expand its AI capabilities. This move is the latest in the company's strategy to secure its infrastructure before its upcoming IPO.

The structure of the agreement is quite remarkable. Nvidia is directly undertaking the lease of the data center in Texas. Developed by Hut 8, the facility allows Lambda to provide cloud services to Anthropic through this lease guarantee from Nvidia. This shows that Nvidia is going beyond being just a chip vendor and is also taking an active role in infrastructure financing.

Anthropic's move is not limited to Lambda. The company previously signed deals with Nvidia-backed Nscale for $45 billion in West Virginia, Fluidstack for $50 billion, and SpaceX for $45 billion. In total, commitments made for 2026 reach $80 billion.

The market is viewing these moves in the context of Anthropic's anticipated IPO. Investors anticipate the Claude maker could go public in October with a valuation exceeding $2 trillion, surpassing the SpaceX record set in June.

However, these aggressive infrastructure investments also bring significant financial risks. Anthropic's annual revenue stream reached approximately $65 billion by the end of July, but how these massive commitments will translate into profitability remains a big question. While Nvidia's financing model offers cloud providers the opportunity to secure deals with large clients, the company's recent suspension of such loan support programs raises questions about the model's sustainability.

Anthropic's appetite for computing power shows no sign of slowing. The company has signed two massive infrastructure agreements that clearly indicate a direction of expansion ahead of its highly anticipated IPO in a few weeks.

First, Anthropic signed a 35 billion unit cloud computing deal with Lambda, a cloud provider hosted by Nvidia. This isn't simply a lease. The data center supporting this agreement is being developed by Hut 8 in Texas. Nvidia itself stepped in, securing the capacity and holding the direct lease. Lambda's role is to have the chips purchased from Nvidia processed by this Hut 8, and then the computing power is delivered directly to Anthropic. This complex arrangement allows Lambda to go from an upfront cost payment for data center space to participating in a broad contract, and Anthropic to have direct access to Nvidia's critical hardware.

This Texas split is enormous in scale. Hut 8 announced a 15-year lease agreement, worth approximately $20 billion, covering the entirety of its 700-megawatt Transformer, the name of which has already been revealed. This Transformer now forms the backbone of Anthropic’s new 35 billion atom commitment.

But Anthropic’s infrastructure didn’t stop in Texas. In early August, the company signed a separate and equally stunning $45 billion deal with another Nvidia-backed cloud provider, Nscale. This six-year agreement secures approximately 460 megawatts of capacity at Nscale’s flagship data center, Transformer, in West Virginia. This Transformer is powered by Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips, expected to be commissioned by the end of 2027.

The timing of these deals is deliberate. Anthropic is preparing for an IPO, with reports pointing to a valuation of 2 standard or more dollars. The biggest question regarding potential capacity is whether Anthropic can deliver the immense processing power needed to maintain the Claude models without being hampered by hardware and power outages. These agreements are designed to answer that question even before it's asked. By establishing such long-term, highly resilient stability, Anthropic is trying to secure its growth path for years to come, according to Wall Street.
