HIVE Digital at $2.78: The $84.7M Swedish VAT Problem Meets the AI Pivot
HIVE Digital Technologies ($HIVE) is facing a major accounting and regulatory overhang just as the company is trying to reposition itself from a crypto-mining operator toward AI and high-performance computing. With HIVE trading around $2.78, the market is now weighing two very different forces: a significant Swedish VAT liability on one side and HIVE’s expanding compute infrastructure opportunity on the other.
The biggest headline is the $84.7 million Swedish VAT provision recorded for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. HIVE recognized SEK 822 million as a non-cash provision after adverse decisions from Swedish administrative courts concerning input-VAT deductions connected primarily with its Swedish hashrate-services operations and related equipment expenditures. The company continues to dispute the underlying assessments and has pursued further legal remedies.
The important distinction is that this is a non-cash accounting provision, not an $84.7 million cash payment made during the quarter. However, it is still financially significant. HIVE reported approximately $79.1 million of quarterly revenue, meaning the VAT provision was larger than the quarter's revenue. HIVE also had approximately $208 million in cash at the end of June, making the potential liability material relative to its liquidity. Interest can continue to accrue on assessed amounts.
HIVE is not accepting the assessments as settled. The company filed applications on July 20, 2026 seeking permission to appeal to Sweden's Supreme Administrative Court. At the same time, HIVE has said it believes it has legal and technical grounds supporting its position. Its latest filings also indicate that it has initiated proceedings involving the European Commission over unresolved EU-law questions.
This makes the $2.78 share price particularly interesting. The market is not simply pricing Bitcoin-mining performance anymore. Investors have to evaluate whether HIVE can successfully manage the Swedish tax exposure while converting its power and data-center infrastructure into higher-value AI and HPC workloads.
That transition is already visible in HIVE's numbers. The company currently operates approximately 440 MW of global power capacity and expects its energized footprint to reach around 540 MW after an additional 100 MW PPA at Yguazú is energized in Q4 2026. HIVE also reported a contracted GPU-cloud ARR of roughly $110 million, with its broader HPC ARR pipeline reaching approximately $155 million.
The strategic argument is therefore straightforward: if HIVE can continue shifting capacity toward AI and high-performance computing, the company could gradually become less dependent on traditional crypto-mining economics. But the Swedish VAT dispute remains a real risk and should not be treated as a minor accounting footnote.
At $2.78, the key question for HIVE shareholders is not simply whether Bitcoin rises. It is whether the company's growing AI/HPC opportunity can eventually outweigh the financial and regulatory pressure created by its Swedish mining legacy.
Bull case: successful appeals, continued Bitcoin strength, expanding GPU-cloud contracts and stronger AI/HPC utilization could improve sentiment around HIVE.
Bear case: additional VAT exposure, accumulating interest, weak crypto-mining economics or slower AI infrastructure monetization could keep pressure on the stock.
The clearest takeaway is that $2.78 HIVE represents a transition story under pressure. The $84.7M provision explains the immediate risk, while the expanding AI/HPC pipeline represents the potential next chapter.
For traders, the next numbers worth watching are the Swedish VAT proceedings, cash/liquidity position, AI/HPC ARR growth, power utilization and the pace at which HIVE converts infrastructure into recurring high-value compute revenue.
This is no longer simply a Bitcoin-mining stock story. HIVE's valuation increasingly depends on whether its AI pivot can create enough economic value to overcome the costs of its mining-era liabilities.
