Tether Chief Rejects BIS Critique, Defends Full Reserve Backing for Stablecoins

The chief of Tether has pushed back against recent criticism from the Bank for International Settlements, arguing that fiat-linked stablecoins are fully backed by reserve assets while tokenized bank deposits lack the scale to meet global demand for digital dollars.

At the core of the dispute lies a clash of visions for digital money. The BIS has voiced doubt over the quality and clarity of reserves held by large stablecoin issuers, favoring tokenized deposits within the banking frame as a sounder path. Tether's chief dismissed that view, saying its tokens are backed one-to-one by a mix of short-term sovereign bills, cash-like holdings and other liquid assets, with regular reports aimed at public review.

The claim of full backing is key to trust. For users who treat dollar-linked tokens as cash on-chain, any gap between coins in issue and liquid reserves could spark swift loss of faith. By stressing over-collateral in high-quality paper, the firm seeks to calm holders and peers who rely on its token for trade settlement, remittance and as a haven during swings.

The second limb of the rebuttal targets scale. Tokenized deposits, the chief argued, remain tied to bank balance sheets, local rules and limited hours, which curbs their reach. In contrast, stablecoins move peer-to-peer across borders at all hours, serving users in zones with weak banking access or high inflation. From this angle, bank-issued digital claims are seen as too narrow to serve as the base layer for open digital commerce.

Policy stakes are high. Regulators in major zones now weigh strict reserve, audit and disclosure rules for issuers. A firm line from a market leader may shape that debate, urging lawmakers to view stablecoins as a parallel cash rail rather than a fringe risk.

In the end, the clash reflects a broader contest over who will issue the digital dollar of the future. Tether wagers on open, reserve-backed tokens. The BIS leans toward bank money in new form. The market, for now, keeps voting with flows.
