🔴 A New Era at Anfield Faces Its First Test: Liverpool vs. Nottingham Forest, Data Edition
Premier League Matchday 2 sends Liverpool back to Anfield for the first home match of the Andoni Iraola era, and on paper, this is the safest fixture of Saturday's schedule. The model data supports that view: Liverpool have a 58.8% chance of winning, a 21.1% chance of a draw, while Forest's win probability is just 20.1%. But deeper data and the teams' recent head-to-head history tell a slightly uneasy story for Reds fans.
Let's start with the context. Liverpool opened the season with a chaotic 2-2 draw away to Newcastle, falling behind twice before new signing Victor Muñoz won a penalty that Dominik Szoboszlai converted in the 99th minute. That leaves them 10th with one point, already looking up at the teams that have made early moves at the top. The team is clearly still finding its rhythm: Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Joe Gomez, Jayden Danns and Giovanni Leoni are all sidelined with injuries, while Curtis Jones is doubtful with a groin problem, and the club's recruitment efforts to replace key departures from last season have been very limited. Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola is reportedly close to joining, but he will not be available for this match. Iraola still has a formidable hand to play: Florian Wirtz operating between the lines, Alexander Isak leading the attack in search of his first goal, Cody Gakpo in excellent form as the club's top scorer, and Ryan Gravenberch partnering Szoboszlai in midfield. The expected lineup is Alisson; Frimpong, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Ngumoha, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak.
Nottingham Forest arrive here with zero points after a 0-1 home defeat to newly promoted Leeds United in Oliver Glasner's first competitive match in charge, with the winning goal not coming until the 88th minute. Losing to the same opponent again in the League Cup during midweek did little to lift morale. The injury list has had a major impact: Nicolo Savona is definitely out after a setback in his recovery from a knee injury, Ryan Yates is unavailable, while Neco Williams and Morgan Gibbs-White are doubtful with minor injuries. Glasner will use a compact 3-4-2-1 formation—with Sels in goal, Milenković commanding the back three, and Igor Jesus and Dan Ndoye providing the counterattacking threat. These match characteristics have indeed caused Liverpool problems in recent meetings, including Forest's famous win at Anfield in the previous campaign and the fiercely contested encounters between the sides last season; the most recent meeting ended in a 1-0 Liverpool victory.
From an analytical perspective, this is a fascinating match. Liverpool's 58.8% win probability makes them clear favorites, but the most likely scoreline is 2-1, with a probability of only 9.9%, while the probability of both teams scoring is 56.9%. The probability of more than 1.5 goals is 80.1%, making goals highly likely, though a clean sheet is not. Iraola understands the danger clearly: “They won't give you anything for free... They are very solid defensively... They also pose a very good threat on the counterattack.” Forest's entire game plan is built around absorbing pressure and striking through transitional attacks, precisely the approach that repeatedly exposed Liverpool's defense at St James' Park earlier.
My view is that Liverpool will control possession and create most of the chances, with the Anfield atmosphere helping them eventually get over the line, but they are expected to endure a tense spell after the start of the second half before the difference in quality emerges. This is a home win, but not a comfortable performance.
Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Nottingham Forest—Isak opens his account, Wirtz controls the match, and a late Forest transition goal will extend the both-teams-to-score run right up to the final whistle.
