MRVL — The AI Story Is Strong, But Price Action Has Changed
Marvell Technology finished August 28 at $216.62, falling 10.28% in one session on approximately 48.98 million shares. The important part is not only the size of the decline; it is the combination of heavy volume and a close close to the session low. MRVL opened around $225.26, reached $228.88, but sellers pushed it to $215.55 before the close. That is a clear sign that supply overwhelmed buyers throughout the session rather than a small intraday pullback.

The broader short-term structure is now weaker. MRVL had been trading around $245 before the earnings reaction, and the stock has now lost roughly 12% from that level in only two sessions. The market is therefore repricing expectations rather than questioning whether Marvell has an AI business at all. The distinction matters: fundamentals remain constructive, while the immediate price structure has turned defensive.

The first area I would watch is $215–$216. Friday's low sits at $215.55, making this the nearest confirmed demand area. If buyers continue defending this zone, MRVL could attempt a technical rebound. If the stock starts accepting prices below it, the next major psychological reference becomes $200, where another large round-number reaction could develop.

Above the market, $228–$230 is now the first meaningful recovery zone. Friday's high was $228.88, so a move through that area would show buyers are finally able to absorb some of the recent supply. The next resistance region sits around $240–$245, where the stock traded immediately before the latest breakdown. A recovery through that zone would be much more meaningful than a simple bounce from $216.

The bigger supply zone is $250–$255. MRVL recently traded above $250, but buyers failed to maintain that strength. That makes the area important because reclaiming it would repair a large portion of the recent technical damage. Until that happens, rallies should be viewed as recovery attempts rather than confirmation that the previous uptrend has fully returned.

Options activity confirms that volatility around MRVL is unusually high. On August 28, approximately 693,770 options contracts traded, while reported open interest was around 1.75 million contracts. The options market was therefore very active during the earnings repricing.

There is also substantial positioning around lower strikes. For the August 28 expiration, the $220 put had more than 2,300 contracts of open interest, while the $200 put had roughly 3,900 contracts. These figures do not automatically mean traders are predicting a collapse; puts can represent hedges as well as bearish bets. But they show that the $200–$220 area was an important zone of downside positioning.

MRVL also has meaningful short interest. The latest reported figure for the August 14 settlement was approximately 28.4 million shares short, down 20.76% from the previous reporting period. That decline suggests some short covering had already taken place before the latest sell-off. Therefore, I would not describe Friday's move as simply a massive short attack. The stronger explanation is a broad reassessment of expectations after earnings.

There is no reliable crypto-style funding-rate or liquidation dataset for MRVL that can legitimately be used here. MRVL is a listed semiconductor stock, so claims about perpetual-futures funding or forced crypto liquidations would be misleading. The better signals are stock volume, options positioning, short interest and the reaction to fundamental guidance.

And this is where the story becomes interesting. Marvell actually delivered a strong quarter. Fiscal Q2 revenue reached approximately $2.74 billion, up 37% year over year, while adjusted EPS came in at $0.94, slightly above expectations. Management also guided fiscal Q3 revenue toward approximately $3.15 billion.

So why did the stock fall?

Expectations had become extremely high. MRVL had already gained more than 160% during 2026 before this earnings reaction, meaning investors were no longer asking whether Marvell could participate in AI growth. They were asking how quickly that growth would translate into revenue, margins and earnings. The market apparently wanted a larger near-term payoff from the company's AI/custom-chip opportunity.

The Google relationship remains one of the biggest long-term catalysts. Marvell and Google are expanding their work around custom AI silicon, including accelerator, networking, memory-interface and related infrastructure technologies. Google also received a warrant that could allow it to acquire up to approximately 58.97 million MRVL shares at $206.58, subject to the agreement's conditions.

The market's concern is timing rather than the existence of the opportunity. Recent reporting indicates that the larger financial contribution from the Google relationship is expected further into the future, while Marvell's analyst/investor event on October 6 should provide additional detail. That creates a gap between what investors see as a potentially enormous AI opportunity and what the income statement can show immediately.

That explains the unusual reaction: good numbers, weaker stock price. When expectations are already extremely high, beating estimates by a small amount may not be enough. The market wants acceleration, not merely confirmation.

The semiconductor backdrop is also working against MRVL in the short term. The latest session saw weakness across several AI-related semiconductor names, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell sharply. Potential U.S. semiconductor tariff concerns added another layer of uncertainty to an already crowded AI trade.

For the bullish scenario, the first confirmation would be a reclaim of $228.88, Friday's high, followed by sustained trade above $230. The next important test would be $240–$245. If MRVL can recover that region and eventually challenge $250–$255, the market would be showing that Friday's collapse was an overshoot rather than the beginning of a deeper repricing. A failure to reclaim $228–$230 would weaken this recovery thesis.

For the bearish scenario, the key confirmation is sustained acceptance below $215.55, Friday's low. That would put the $200 psychological level back into focus. The $206.58 Google warrant exercise price is another reference point, but it should not be treated as guaranteed technical support. If the $200 region also fails, the market would be signaling that investors are willing to assign a materially lower near-term valuation while waiting for future AI revenue growth.

My current verdict is short-term consolidation/repricing with a bearish technical bias, but not a broken long-term fundamental story. The price has weakened much faster than the underlying business. That creates a very important distinction for MRVL: the next move depends less on another headline about AI demand and more on whether buyers can absorb the enormous supply created by the earnings reaction.

For now, $215.55 is the immediate line to watch, $228.88 is the first recovery confirmation, $240–$245 is the larger structural test, and $250–$255 is the major reclaim zone. Until price begins recovering those levels, the market is telling us that expectations have been reset even though Marvell's long-term AI opportunity remains intact.
