Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest — Anfield Has a Problem to Solve
A new manager, a new season, and still no first win.
Liverpool’s opening 2–2 draw at Newcastle showed plenty of attacking intent, but it also exposed gaps that Andoni Iraola will want to correct quickly. Liverpool had 61% possession and 27 shots in that match, yet they still needed a 99th-minute penalty to escape with a point.
Now the setting changes to Anfield, where Liverpool should have more control of the ball and more opportunities to dictate the tempo. Forest, however, are not arriving simply to defend. They have already shown that this fixture can be uncomfortable for Liverpool, winning their last two league visits to Anfield. Opta also gives Liverpool a 61.1% win probability, but that recent head-to-head record is a reminder that this is not a completely predictable matchup.
Forest’s bigger concern is their attack. Oliver Glasner’s side have lost their opening two competitive matches against Leeds and failed to score in either game. They will need a much sharper performance from Morgan Gibbs-White and their forwards if they want to exploit Liverpool on the counter.
For me, the key battle is Liverpool’s attacking pressure against Forest’s ability to stay compact. If Liverpool move the ball quickly and avoid leaving space behind their midfield, they should gradually take control. Forest’s best moments are likely to come when Liverpool overcommit and give them room to counter.
My prediction: Liverpool 2–0 Nottingham Forest.
I expect Forest to make the opening stages competitive, but Liverpool’s possession, home advantage and attacking pressure should eventually create the difference.
