Crystal Palace vs Manchester City | The Game May Be Decided Without the Ball
Premier League | Matchweek 2
📅 28 August 2026
⏰ 20:00 BST / 19:00 UTC
🏟️ Selhurst Park, London
Manchester City are the favourites, but I don't think this is a match they can simply control through possession.
The more interesting question is what happens in the moments immediately after possession changes.
City arrive with confidence after coming from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1, while Palace are looking for a response after a 2-0 defeat to Everton. That gives both teams a different kind of pressure entering this game.
Palace's opportunity is clear.
They don't need to dominate the ball. Their best route is to make City uncomfortable, win possession in useful areas and attack before City's defensive structure is fully restored.
That is where Selhurst Park can become important.
If Palace can turn the first few City turnovers into genuine attacking situations, the home crowd could give them another level of energy. But if City consistently recover the second ball and immediately restart their attacks, Palace could spend too much of the match defending.
For City, patience will be everything.
Their challenge is not simply creating possession — it is converting that possession into clear chances without giving Palace easy transition opportunities.
And there is another reason I’m not expecting a straightforward afternoon for the visitors: City themselves recognise Selhurst Park as a difficult away ground, with recent meetings there proving uncomfortable.
The opening goal therefore carries huge weight.
Palace score first: City have to increase the risk, creating exactly the spaces Palace want.
City score first: Palace must push forward, potentially giving City more room to attack.
0-0 after 60 minutes: pressure rises on both sides, and squad depth could become decisive.
My match reading is:
Palace begin with energy → City absorb the early pressure → possession gradually shifts toward the visitors → Palace threaten through quick attacks → City create more sustained pressure → the final 20 minutes decide it.
🎯 FINAL PREDICTION
Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester City
Winner: Manchester City
Confidence: 7/10
I expect Palace to make City work for this.
But over the full 90 minutes, I give City the advantage because they have more control over the tempo and more ways to change the game when the first plan isn't working.
The key question for me is simple:
Can Palace turn their limited possession into real chances before City completely control the rhythm?
If they can, this becomes a serious test for City.
If they cannot, I expect the visitors to gradually squeeze the game away from them.
My call: a competitive Palace performance, but City leave London with three points.
