Strategy Shares Break $135 For First Time In 12 Weeks: BTC Beta Back
Strategy shares closed at $137.20, up 8.3% on day, first close above $135 in 12 weeks. High was $138.90, low was $128.10, volume 18.4 million shares vs 9.2 million average, or 2x. Market cap now $38.1 billion.
Move came as BTC broke back above $81k, up 3.1% to $81.3k. Strategy holds 632,457 BTC worth $51.4 billion at $81.3k, so stock is high beta proxy.
Why $135 Break Matters
$135 was ceiling since late May. Three tests failed at $133 to $135 in June and July, each followed by 12% to 18% drop. This time break came with volume 2x and BTC close above $80k, not below.
Short interest was 12.4% of float, or 18 million shares. Today short cover added fuel. Borrow cost rose from 3.2% to 8.5% annual.
Premium to BTC hold also rose. At $137.20, implied value per share is $51.4 billion BTC plus $1.1 billion soft unit, divided by 278 million shares fully diluted = $189 per share NAV. Stock at $137 trades at 27% discount to NAV, vs 35% discount a week ago. Discount tightened as BTC rose.
Drivers Behind Move
One, BTC flow. Spot ETF saw +4,038 BTC net inflow, equal to $328 million, 9x daily mined supply of 450 BTC. Three-day inflow near 9,200 BTC. That flow lifted BTC from $79.2k low to $81.85k high.
Two, M2 turn. US M2 growth hit 4.5% year over year, fastest in four years, up from -4.6% in 2023. M2 at $21.4 trillion, up $210 billion month over month. Past cycle when M2 rose above 4%, BTC beta stock rose 22% on average in next 30 days.
Three, firm action. Strategy added 3,450 BTC last week at average $79,800, funded via $380 million ATM sale. Firm now has $2.1 billion cash for more buy if BTC dips.
Macro: US federal debt above $40 trillion, 10-year yield near 4.70%, gold above $2,650. Hard asset bid supports BTC proxy.
What Next
Key levels: $135 now support, $142 next resist where 12-week call wall sits with 45k contracts, then $150 top from May.
Risk: BTC beta cuts both ways. If BTC closes below $79k, stock could fall 9% to 11% in one day based on 1.8 beta. $380 million long liq sits below $78.5k BTC, which would hit Strategy fast.
Options flow shows call buy: $140 strike call for Aug 29 expiry saw 22k contracts traded, implied vol rose from 68% to 82%.
For now, break above $135 after 12 weeks marks end of base and start of new leg, driven by BTC back above $81k and ETF inflow of 4,038 BTC.
