US stock markets are facing a high risk of volatility ahead of Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's crucial speech at Jackson Hole. Markets are struggling to find direction following core inflation rising to 3.7% in July and growth data at 1.5%. Warsh's "concise" communication style, coupled with the expectation that he may not offer clear verbal guidance regarding the September interest rate decision, is paving the way for sharp movements in both directions in the stock markets.
Hawk or Dove: Scenarios and Stock Analysis
Three main macroeconomic scenarios are being priced into the markets for Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's first Jackson Hole address at 5:00 PM:
Hawk Scenario (35% Probability): If Warsh emphasizes that inflation remains persistently above the 2% target and reiterates that interest rate hikes are on the table if necessary, expectations for an interest rate increase at the September meeting could climb.
* Market Impact: Sharp pullbacks may be seen in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. High-indebted, high-multiplier-rate growth companies will be pressured.
* Dovish Scenario (15% Probability): A message will be conveyed highlighting financial innovation, the contribution of AI to productivity growth, and the fact that tightening has slowed the economy sufficiently.
* Market Impact: A new rally in technology stocks will be triggered, bond yields will fall, and the stock market will experience a general rise.
* Uncertainty / Maintaining Current Communication (50% Probability): Warsh will avoid outlining a clear interest rate path, stating that he will remain data-driven. With the probability of a "pass" in September peaking at 68% in Kalshi's forecast markets, the lack of a clear signal could lead to disappointment in the market.
Can Technology Stocks Continue Their Rise?
Large technology companies continue to hold the indices afloat. NVIDIA (NVDA) earnings, which rose 8.7% yesterday, exceeding expectations, proved that AI spending is in full swing. However, technology stocks face two major barriers:
* Cost of Capital Pressure: The consolidation of US 10-year Treasury yields at 4.66% is eroding the present value of future cash flows for technology companies.
* Treasury-Fed Conflict: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's efforts to lower borrowing costs through bond buybacks clash with the Fed's anti-inflation policy. This makes macroeconomic balances fragile.
Risk Mitigation Strategy for Investor Portfolios
In such a high-risk period, instead of taking aggressive, one-sided positions, a balanced strategy should be followed to minimize the risk of capital loss:
* Diversify: Instead of limiting the portfolio to technology alone, make room for defensive value stocks with strong cash flow.
* Maintain Cash Reserves: Preserve liquidity to turn any sharp corrections in equity markets into buying opportunities in the event of a hawkish surprise.
* Monitor Costs: Avoiding leveraged trades and products with high carrying costs (hidden fees) is critical for your financial health during this process.
