⚽ Bayern Munich vs Stuttgart Champions Open Their Crown Defense at the Allianz

The new Bundesliga season begins where the old one left off: with Bayern Munich as the team to beat, and Stuttgart hoping this year will finally be different. Friday's opener at the Allianz Arena has all the ingredients of a statement match a fortress home crowd, a newly crowned supercup champion, and an opponent with genuine attacking talent but a miserable recent record in Munich.

Let's start with the hosts. Bayern won the title last season in commanding fashion and their home form was the engine behind it: 44 points from a possible 51 at the Allianz, with 68 goals scored in front of their own fans. They arrive here on the back of a Franz Beckenbauer Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund on August 22, which means Vincent Kompany's squad is already in competitive rhythm rather than easing into the campaign. The attacking numbers underline the point 11 goals in their last four matches, with Harry Kane leading the line, Michael Olise providing the creativity from the right, and new signing Luis Díaz adding width and directness on the left.

There are two availability concerns for the hosts: Jamal Musiala is ruled out through illness and Serge Gnabry misses out with an adductor problem. That removes some of Bayern's dribbling threat between the lines, but Kompany showed against Dortmund that his midfield rotation Kimmich anchoring, Pavlovic alongside copes comfortably without the injured stars. The full-backs will push high, Olise will cut inside onto his left foot, and Kane's dropping deep will drag Stuttgart's centre-backs out of shape.

Now Stuttgart. Sebastian Hoeneß's side enter their fourth full season under their coach and are the most settled of Bayern's challengers, but the gulf in class and resources is still vast. The visitors are missing up to seven players, including striker Jeremy Arevalo, yet they keep real quality in attack: Deniz Undav, Dzenan Pejcinovic, Chris Führich and Bilal El-Khannouss can all hurt teams on the transition, and they scored four in their most recent outing. Undav's movement in the half-spaces behind Bayern's high line is the one thing that could trouble the champions' defence.

The history is brutally one-sided, though. Stuttgart have scored one or fewer goals in eight of their last twelve meetings with Bayern, and two of the last three head-to-heads sailed past 3.5 total goals. In May, Bayern beat them 3-0 in the DFB-Pokal final the third clean-sheet win over Stuttgart in the space of a year. Bayern's high press, Kimmich's control of tempo, and Kane's penalty-box presence should stretch a Stuttgart backline missing bodies.

My read: Bayern dominate possession, strike early, and never really look back. Stuttgart's best chance comes from a counter-attack goal after the game opens up in the second half, but a consolation is the most they can realistically take. Expect goals at both ends late, but the result is rarely in doubt.
