NVIDIA's Earnings Illuminate Oracle's $638 Billion RPO

NVIDIA's second-quarter results, to be announced today, are a litmus test not only for its own performance but also for the health of Oracle's massive AI infrastructure order book.

The $638 Billion Question for Oracle

Oracle's $638 billion RPO (Remaining Performance Obligations) figure, announced last month, has sparked two opposing interpretations in the market. Optimists see it as "years of guaranteed revenue," while skeptics question how much of these orders will actually translate into tangible revenue.

As highlighted by Deirdre Bosa of CNBC, a key concern is that the chip cycle is moving faster than the infrastructure build time. The rejection of Blackwell chips planned for OpenAI's Stargate facility in Texas by Vera Rubin, on the grounds that they would be "obsolete" by the time they were released, is a prime example of this. Oracle's $95.2 billion procurement obligation—commitments it has to pay even if customers aren't ready—underscores this risk.

The Role of Rubin and the Importance of NVIDIA's Balance Sheet

The Vera Rubin platform is at the very heart of this discussion. NVIDIA's Vera Rubin NVL72 system has gone into full production globally and is being adopted by platforms like CoreWeave, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). Rubin promises up to 10 times higher agent throughput at scale compared to Grace Blackwell. This directly improves the economics of every megawatt deployed to OCI.

So why is this important for Oracle? Because Oracle is in a different position in this infrastructure game compared to AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. While large cloud providers have stronger cash flows and their own proprietary chips, pure AI players like CoreWeave and Nebius are more sensitive to GPU usage rates and funding costs. Oracle sits somewhere between these two extremes.

NVIDIA's earnings report will shed light on this picture from several angles:

1. Demand Vitality: Strong NVIDIA revenue growth will confirm that Oracle's AI contracts are following a vibrant infrastructure cycle, not "demand pushed back to a distant date."
2. Rubin Timing: A clear message regarding Rubin's production and delivery schedule will mitigate the risk Oracle faces (the risk of chip obsolescence) when investing in this new platform.
3. Margin Pressure: The impact of rising memory and manufacturing costs on NVIDIA's margins will provide a clue about the cost pressure faced by infrastructure builders like Oracle.

RPO to Revenue Conversion

Oracle's $638 billion RPO is an impressive figure, but whether these numbers translate into revenue depends heavily on the picture NVIDIA will present tonight. Is Rubin arriving on time? Is demand evaporating before the infrastructure is built? Tonight's earnings report will provide the strongest answers to these questions. Tonight's best outcome will be a picture where AI demand continues to grow, Rubin remains on the schedule, and token output per megawatt continues to improve.
