SK Hynix Jumps Over 5%: Rebound After Sell-Off, US Listing Plan, and AI Memory Demand

SK Hynix rose as much as 5.8% in morning trade, Samsung rose as much as 1.4%. The move came after a sharp sell-off. In the prior session both names fell 4% to 5%, tracking overnight losses in US chip stocks where Intel, Micron and AMD dropped 4.7% to 9.7% and the Philadelphia chip index fell 4.7%.

The rebound was driven by bargain buying. Research notes said earnings outlook remains solid and tight memory supply should support demand through Q3.

The second driver was the US listing plan. SK Hynix disclosed plan to list ADR on Nasdaq Global Select with a target to raise around $30 billion. That news lifted mood in Seoul and was cited as support for holder mood.

The third driver was Micron results. Micron revenue hit $41.5 billion vs $35.9 billion forecast, up 346% year over year. Q4 revenue guide was around $50 billion. CEO said tight conditions could last beyond 2027 due to AI-driven demand across all segments and structural supply limits.

This trio lifted KOSPI. KOSPI closed at 5925.03, up 284.55 points or 5.04%, regaining the 5900 level for first time since late last month. Samsung closed at 208,500 won, up 14,600 won or 7.53%, SK Hynix closed at 1,056,000 won, up 86,000 won or 8.87%. For first time ever, share of top two stocks in KOSPI total value topped 40%. A buy-side halt was triggered at 2:34 pm, the fourth such halt this year.

Foreign flow also turned. After five straight days of net sell, foreign buyers net bought 880 billion won in KOSPI and 493 billion won in KOSDAQ. By stock, net buy was 282 billion won for Samsung and 593 billion won for SK Hynix.

GTC 2026 added fuel. Comments from Nvidia CEO and SK Group Chairman on rising memory demand were read as fresh proof that AI chip super-cycle remains alive. Micron up 4.5% overnight ahead of its report also helped Seoul mood.

On risk side, JPMorgan said memory pricing will stay key for H2 profit, supply still lags demand though buyer pushback on high cost is growing. Kiwoom lowered its target for Samsung by about 9% to 390,000 won, citing rising CPU and package substrate cost that could make PC and phone makers more cautious on extra memory buy. It also noted NAND pricing could beat forecast on strong US hyper-scale demand.

Bottom line: the over 5% jump was not random. Cheap entry after drop + US listing plan + strong Micron print + AI memory super-cycle + foreign net buy came together. Near-term watch: contract price for DDR5 and HBM, progress on US listing timeline, and foreign flow staying net buy.
