Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao — My Match Prediction

Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao is one of those matches where the home advantage, recent form and head-to-head record all point in the same direction. In my opinion, Barcelona have the stronger chance of taking all three points at Camp Nou, and my prediction is Barcelona to win 3-1.

Barcelona started their 2026/27 La Liga campaign in excellent fashion with a dominant 5-0 victory over Elche. Their attacking football looked sharp, with Raphinha, Fermín López and Karim Adeyemi making a strong impact. Athletic Bilbao, on the other hand, suffered a 3-1 defeat against Sevilla in their opening game. Although that match was heavily influenced by an early red card, Athletic still have to face a much stronger attacking side in Barcelona.

The biggest reason behind my Barcelona prediction is their recent dominance in this fixture. Barcelona have won the last six meetings between these teams, scoring 17 goals while conceding only once. Athletic have also struggled to score against Barça, failing to find the net in five of their last six meetings. Barcelona are additionally unbeaten in their last 15 La Liga home meetings with Athletic, which makes Camp Nou a very difficult place for the visitors to get a result.

I also expect Lamine Yamal and Raphinha to be major threats. Barcelona have enough attacking quality to create chances from both wings, while their midfield can control possession and continuously put Athletic under pressure. Another interesting factor is Rodri, with Hansi Flick confirming that the plan is for him to play.

Even if he does not start, his presence could add another level of control to Barcelona's midfield.

However, I don't think Athletic Bilbao should be underestimated. They have dangerous players such as Nico Williams who can cause problems on the counter-attack, and their new coach Edin Terzic will want his team to respond after the disappointing opening defeat. Athletic also have the physical strength and intensity to make the match difficult, especially if Barcelona become too aggressive and leave space behind their defence.

My expected match pattern is Barcelona controlling possession from the beginning, creating several opportunities and eventually breaking Athletic's defensive structure. I expect Athletic to have moments where they threaten Barcelona, but over 90 minutes I believe Barça's superior attacking quality and home advantage will make the difference.

For me, Barcelona are the clear favourite in this matchup. Athletic can fight and create problems, but considering Barcelona's current momentum, their recent dominance in this fixture and their exceptional home record, I expect the defending champions to start their home campaign with another important victory.
