BTC Pullback To $79,000: Healthy Flush After $81k Break Or Start Of Deeper Slide

BTC fell to $79,000 after topping $81,250, a 2.7% drop that flushed $340 million of long in 6 hours. Daily volume spiked to $88 billion, funding fell from 0.024% to 0.008%, and open interest fell 9% to $35.1 billion. Spot held bid while perp sold, a classic long squeeze, not spot exit.

After 92 days of range, break above $81k lured late long. This pullback is first test if $79k holds as new floor.

Why $79k Was Hit

Three drivers lined up.

One, profit take at $81k wall. Order book showed $1.4 billion of ask between $81k and $81,500. Once $81,250 printed, spot sellers hit. Coinbase premium flipped from +$65 to -$18 in 2 hours, sign that US cash bid paused.

Two, rate scare. US 10-year yield rose 11 bps to 4.81% on hot jobs data, Dollar Index rose 0.5%, and gold slipped to $2,610. Risk off hit coin, equity, and Nikkei alike.

Three, leverage wash. Funding at 0.024% with open interest at $38.5 billion was ripe for wipe. Once $80,500 broke, stop cascade ran to $79,000 where $420 million of long stop sat. No spot panic, just perp flush.

On-Chain Flow Shows Hold, Not Exit

Exchange BTC balance fell by 2,100 coins during drop, not rose. Wallets with 1,000 to 10,000 coins added 3,200 BTC. ETF inflow stayed positive at $180 million net on day of drop, though down from $480 million prior day.

Stable coin reserve on major venues rose to $42 billion, up 6% week over week, which shows dry powder waiting.

Long term holder supply rose to 14.82 million BTC, new high. Those holders did not sell $81k top.

What $79k Level Means

$79k to $79,500 is key confluence. It is 20-day moving average, prior range top, and 0.5 fib of $68k to $81,250 run. Hold of daily close above $79,000 keeps uptrend intact and keeps path to $84k to $86k open.

Break below $79k on daily close opens $76,800 where $1.1 billion of long liquidation sits, and $74,500 where 50-day average sits.

Market structure now is spot-led. Spot volume share rose to 61% versus perp, up from 52%. That mix favors dip buy.

With US federal debt above $40 trillion, Treasury buyback at $4 billion per week, and repo near 5.31%, liquidity backdrop still supports hard asset. This $79k pullback looks like healthy flush of late long, not trend flip, unless ETF flow turns net negative for 3 days and funding turns negative.

Next 48 hours will tell. Hold $79k and bid can rebuild toward $81k. Lose $79k and wash could extend to $76,800 before fresh bid steps in.
