Goldman Sachs Strongly Supports CXMT: What Does the 129 Yuan Target Price Mean?
Global investment giant Goldman Sachs has included China’s leading DRAM manufacturer, Changxin Memory Technologies (CXMT), in its analysis and assigned a “buy” recommendation with a 12-month target price of 129 yuan for the stock. This move has reignited market interest in China’s semiconductor localization strategy.
Growth Expectations Specifically for CXMT
Goldman Sachs’ optimistic report is based on increasing demand for AI-focused memory, capacity expansion plans, and import substitution policies. According to the report, CXMT’s monthly production capacity is expected to increase from approximately 270,000 units in 2026 to 447,000 units in 2028 and 665,000 units in 2030. This figure means the company could meet approximately 50% of China’s total DRAM needs. Another noteworthy point is the prediction that high-bandwidth memory (HBM) revenue will jump from 2% in 2026 to 27% in 2030.
Challenges Against Optimism
However, this bright picture is overshadowed by three significant risk factors. First, the global DRAM market is dominated by three giants – Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron – with a 90% share, and these companies have a significant advantage in advanced technologies like HBM. CXMT is still in its infancy in this area and needs time to close the technological gap. Second, the memory semiconductor sector exhibits strong cyclical characteristics. CXMT's aggressive production increase with the approximately $8.5 billion in funding it obtained from its IPO could create a surplus, putting pressure on prices. Finally, US export restrictions on advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment, particularly access to EUV lithography machines, stand as the biggest obstacle for CXMT.
Goldman Sachs' CXMT report is more than just a short-term valuation study; it's a test of China's goal of technological independence. The 129 yuan target price will be shaped by several variables, including production efficiency, customer approval processes, and changes in the global supply chain. For investors, this represents both significant potential and a process to watch closely.
