Grayscale Files for Spot Zcash ETF as Privacy Tokens Rally

Asset management giant Grayscale has submitted updated filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch the first-ever spot Zcash (ZEC) exchange-traded fund. The announcement caused a sharp rally in Zcash, pushing the privacy-focused token to multi-year highs as derivative futures trading volumes crossed into multi-billion-dollar territory. Institutional interest in privacy-focused protocols appears to be picking up, as fund managers aim to diversify beyond standard spot Bitcoin and Ethereum funds by offering exposure to zero-knowledge privacy infrastructure.

From Bitcoin ETFs to Ethereum ETFs, and now Zcash—is it other privacy projects’ turn next? It feels like this wave is bringing the privacy sector from underground into the spotlight.

To be honest, Zcash has a solid technical foundation. Its zero-knowledge proof technology is more reliable than that of most projects claiming to offer privacy. If it can really get an ETF, that would be a very important signal for the industry's move toward compliance.

Privacy coins have always lived in the shadow of regulation. Grayscale’s move is essentially telling traditional capital: Don’t be afraid, we’ll pave the way for you. The only question is whether the SEC will drag it out for another three years.

The SEC has clearly never been very fond of privacy coins, so Grayscale filing an application at this point at least shows that institutions have the guts to test regulatory boundaries. As for whether it gets approved, hype up the expectations first and worry about that later.

Grayscale’s push for a spot Zcash ETF has really added fuel to the privacy sector, and ZEC’s latest rally is finally starting to look like what an established privacy coin should.
