Bitcoin’s $81K Breakout Is Being Tested Is $82.5K Still Within Reach?

Bitcoin has entered a much stronger technical zone, but the market is now facing an important question: after briefly breaking above $81,000, can BTC build enough momentum to reach the next target around $82,500?

With BTC currently trading near $79,050, the picture has changed quickly. Bitcoin recently reached around $81,238, its highest level since mid-May, before pulling back below $80K. That means the market has already proven that buyers are willing to challenge the $80K–$81K area, but the rejection also shows that this zone is attracting significant profit-taking.

THE EVENT-MARKET SIGNAL

The interesting part is the Gate Event Market pricing. The market currently assigns roughly 64% probability to BTC reaching $82,500. This does not guarantee the target will be reached; instead, it shows that market participants still see a meaningful chance of another upside attempt after the recent breakout.

At $79,050, Bitcoin is approximately 4.4% below $82,500. So the target is not far away in percentage terms, but BTC first needs to reclaim the psychological $80,000 level and then overcome the recent $81,000–$81,250 resistance zone.

WHY THE BULLS STILL HAVE A CASE

The broader momentum remains impressive. Bitcoin is reported to be up around 28% in August, putting it on track for its strongest monthly gain since November 2024. The latest rally has also been supported by a softer U.S. dollar and expectations that Treasury actions could limit pressure from rising long-term yields.

Regulatory optimism is another factor. Recent expectations for clearer U.S. crypto rules have improved sentiment toward digital assets, while the broader crypto market has also participated in the move rather than Bitcoin rallying completely alone.

This combination gives the bulls a credible argument: stronger liquidity conditions, improving regulatory expectations and renewed risk appetite are creating a supportive backdrop.

BUT THE $79K PULLBACK MATTERS

The biggest warning is simple: BTC broke above $80K, touched $81K+, and then returned toward $79K.

That means the breakout has not yet been fully confirmed as a sustained move. If buyers defend the $78K–$79K region, the pullback could become a normal retest before another attempt at $80K and $81K.

If BTC loses that area decisively, however, the market could begin testing lower support instead of immediately targeting $82.5K.

For me, the critical sequence is:

$79K holds → $80K reclaimed → $81.2K broken → $82.5K becomes the next major upside test.

BULL CASE VS BEAR CASE

The bullish setup is a clean recovery above $80K followed by strong volume and a decisive break of the recent $81.2K high. That would turn the recent rejection into a successful retest and strengthen the case for $82.5K.

The bearish setup is a failure to reclaim $80K, followed by continued selling below $79K. In that scenario, the 64% Event Market probability could quickly change as traders reassess the probability of the upside target.

There is another important point: recent Bitcoin momentum has been helped by short covering and changing macro expectations. That means the next leg higher needs fresh demand, not simply traders closing bearish positions. The longer BTC can hold elevated levels after the breakout, the stronger the technical structure becomes.

MY CURRENT VIEW

At ~$79,050, I remain cautiously bullish rather than blindly bullish.

The Gate Event Market's 64% probability for $82,500 is notable, and the broader macro environment has recently become more supportive for Bitcoin. But BTC needs to prove that the $80K breakout can turn into sustained support.

My key levels are $79K as the immediate decision area, $80K as the psychological reclaim, $81.2K as the breakout confirmation, and $82.5K as the next major target.

If BTC regains $80K and then breaks the recent $81.2K high with convincing volume, I believe $82.5K becomes a realistic next target.

The market has already shown that Bitcoin can break $81K.

Now the real test is whether buyers can turn that breakout into a new support zone.
