#USTreasuryBuybacksAndRegulatorySignalsDriveCryptoSurge The cryptocurrency market has delivered one of its sharpest advances in months, driven by a combination of U.S. Treasury policy adjustments and clearer regulatory signals from Washington. Bitcoin climbed more than 20 percent in a single week, briefly approaching the 80,000-dollar region after trading near 64,000 dollars earlier in the period. The broader digital-asset complex followed, supported by substantial short-position liquidations and renewed inflows into spot exchange-traded products.
The catalyst originated in the Treasury market. After the 30-year yield approached levels last seen in 2007, the Treasury Department announced it would at least double the size of its liquidity-support buyback operations for longer-dated nominal securities. The maximum per-operation amount for 10-to-30-year bonds will rise to at least 4 billion dollars from the previous 2 billion-dollar cap. The change takes effect in early September and runs through early November. These operations involve repurchasing older, less-liquid bonds while funding the purchases through shorter-term issuance. Officials framed the step as a response to strong investor demand to sell into existing buybacks and a desire to support secondary-market liquidity.
Although the program is not quantitative easing and does not expand the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet, markets interpreted the move as a meaningful policy signal. Long-term yields eased modestly after the announcement, the dollar softened, and risk assets rallied. In crypto, the immediate effect was amplified by a large overhang of leveraged short positions. Billions of dollars in bearish bets were liquidated as prices accelerated higher, turning a policy adjustment into a powerful short squeeze.
Regulatory developments reinforced the positive shift in sentiment. Senior officials have publicly supported legislation that would provide clearer rules for digital assets, while the Securities and Exchange Commission has advanced proposals that could create more structured pathways for certain crypto offerings. These signals reduced one of the persistent overhangs that had weighed on the sector for much of the year. Combined net inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs reached approximately 2.6 billion dollars during the week of the rally, adding a fundamental bid beneath the technical squeeze.
My assessment is that the episode illustrates how sensitive crypto remains to shifts in the liquidity and policy environment. A relatively modest change in Treasury buyback sizing was enough to alter risk appetite because it arrived after an extended period of elevated long-term yields and regulatory uncertainty. The market is not responding to a sudden expansion of money supply; it is responding to evidence that policymakers are actively managing the cost and liquidity of government debt while simultaneously reducing ambiguity around digital-asset rules.
The sustainability of the advance will depend on whether the Treasury’s actions continue to stabilize the long end of the curve and whether regulatory clarity continues to improve. Elevated yields still impose a cost on risk assets, and any renewed rise in longer-term rates could quickly reverse the recent gains. At the same time, the combination of improved liquidity signals and constructive policy rhetoric has restored a degree of momentum that had been missing for months. For now, the market has demonstrated once again that crypto trades as a high-beta expression of liquidity conditions and policy expectations. The Treasury’s decision to expand buybacks, paired with regulatory encouragement, proved sufficient to unlock a powerful move higher.
