Bitcoin Beating Gold in America? The Numbers Show a Deeper Shift
One figure deserves more serious attention than just the price of Bitcoin: 49.6 million adults in the United States are now estimated to own Bitcoin, compared with around 28.8 million who own gold. River data shows that BTC ownership has reached 18.6% of the US adult population, while gold stands at around 10.8%.
The difference amounts to around 20.8 million people. This does not mean Bitcoin has replaced gold as a store of value—the two have very different characteristics and risks. But the figure shows something more important: Bitcoin has successfully changed asset ownership behavior among Americans in a very short period.
Bitcoin's Advantage Is No Longer Just Technology
Gold has thousands of years of history as a hedging asset. Bitcoin was only born in 2009.
However, Bitcoin offers something structurally different: it can be purchased in small amounts, traded 24/7, stored digitally, and is now increasingly accessible through apps and ETFs.
Adoption is also rising rapidly. River notes that the US Bitcoin ownership rate was previously around 14.3%, before rising to 18.6%.
In other words, Bitcoin's growth is not coming solely from crypto traders. Its owner base increasingly resembles the mainstream asset market.
America Is Increasingly Becoming the Center of the Bitcoin Ecosystem
Changes at the household level are reinforced by institutions. According to data cited by River, US public companies control around 92.7% of the Bitcoin held by public companies globally, while overall US Bitcoin holdings are estimated to account for around 42% of the global Bitcoin supply.
This is the most interesting part.
Bitcoin in the US is now developing across three layers simultaneously:
Retail → ETF → Corporations
If this trend continues, Bitcoin will no longer merely be an alternative asset class, but will become increasingly integrated into the American investment system.
Conclusion
The figure of 49.6 million versus 28.8 million does not mean Bitcoin has “beaten” gold.
Its significance is greater:
In less than two decades, Bitcoin has built a base of individual owners larger than gold's in one of the world's largest financial markets.
The next question is no longer whether Americans are familiar with Bitcoin.
The question is: how much of their wealth allocation will ultimately shift to Bitcoin?
