The Next AI Bottleneck May Not Be Silicon
The AI boom is forcing investors to look beyond GPUs, memory and data centers. One of the less obvious materials gaining strategic importance is tungsten.
Tungsten sits deep inside the advanced technology supply chain. Its compounds, including tungsten hexafluoride, are used in semiconductor manufacturing to create extremely small conductive structures. It also plays an important role across high-performance electronics and defense applications.
That creates a potential supply-chain vulnerability.
China remains the dominant force in global tungsten production, while tighter export controls and restricted availability are increasing pressure on international supply. At the same time, AI infrastructure continues expanding, requiring increasingly sophisticated chips and manufacturing processes.
The chain is straightforward:
AI expansion → advanced chips → specialized manufacturing → critical materials → secure supply.
If access to tungsten becomes more expensive or less predictable, semiconductor manufacturers could face another layer of cost and supply risk.
That is why alternative sources deserve attention.
One project I am watching is the Sangdong tungsten project in South Korea, which could become part of the effort to diversify supply away from China. But new production does not appear overnight. Permitting, construction, financing and scaling can take years.
This creates two very different scenarios.
Bullish case: export restrictions remain tight, semiconductor demand accelerates and alternative supply struggles to scale quickly. Physical tungsten scarcity could then support higher prices and increase the strategic value of non-Chinese producers.
Bearish case: alternative mines ramp faster than expected, recycling improves, export restrictions ease or manufacturers find economical substitutes. In that scenario, the shortage premium could fade rapidly.
The important point is that I would not chase a vertical move simply because the AI narrative is strong.
I would rather see consolidation, higher lows and confirmation that physical supply remains genuinely constrained.
The bigger investment story may be changing.
The question is no longer only:
Who makes the best AI chip?
It is increasingly:
Who controls the materials, energy and infrastructure required to manufacture those chips?
Tungsten may be one of the hidden strategic layers of the next AI cycle.
But as always, the strongest thesis still needs disciplined entries, realistic supply assumptions and proper risk management.
