Senator Lummis Criticizes Clarity Act: Banks Blocking the Law
Senator Cynthia Lummis stated that the biggest obstacle to the Clarity Act is the banks. According to Lummis, the banks are demanding the inclusion of GENIUS Act amendments in the law and have fired lobbyists who previously agreed on a compromise text.
Bank Demands and Change of Tactics
Senator Lummis noted that banks have intensified their lobbying efforts to block the Clarity Act. Specifically, they are demanding that regulations regarding stablecoin yields be aligned with the GENIUS Act. The dismissal of lobbyists who previously agreed on this shows a change in strategy and a tougher stance by the banks.
Impact on the Future of the Law
The Clarity Act will be voted on in the Senate on September 15th. These last-minute moves by the banks could complicate the passage of the law. The law aims to resolve the jurisdictional confusion between the SEC and the CFTC and provide a clear regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry. However, objections from banks are creating new disagreements, particularly regarding stablecoin regulations.
Assessment
Senator Lummis's statements demonstrate that the political obstacles to the CLARITY Act stem not only from bipartisan conflicts but also from intra-industry conflicts of interest. The strong opposition from banks raises questions about the importance of the law for the crypto industry and how traditional financial institutions will be affected by these regulations. It is noted that if these demands from the banks are not met in the coming days, the passage of the law may become even more difficult.
