A major Bitcoin security incident linked to a Coldcard firmware vulnerability has now reached a scale that deserves serious attention. The figures you provided point to 1,789.28 BTC lost across 8,865 addresses, with the stolen coins valued at roughly $114.7 million at the time of theft and around $138.8 million at current valuations. Earlier Galaxy-linked reporting had already identified multiple waves of coordinated wallet draining, showing that the incident was not an isolated failure.
The most important lesson is that this was not simply a case of someone stealing a physical hardware wallet. Investigations have linked the incident to a 2021 firmware issue involving weak software-based randomness during seed generation. That matters because a hardware wallet can protect private keys extremely well, but if the seed was generated with insufficient randomness, the underlying secret may still be predictable. In other words, strong hardware cannot completely compensate for compromised key generation.
The scale of the losses makes the numbers particularly striking. With 8,865 affected addresses, the median loss of about 0.00152 BTC shows that the attack was not limited to a handful of major holders. At the same time, the average loss of 0.20184 BTC demonstrates how dramatically individual losses varied. That difference is important: the incident affected many addresses, but the financial impact was distributed very unevenly.
Another critical point is that updating firmware alone does not necessarily make an already-generated vulnerable seed safe. Security guidance surrounding the incident has emphasized generating a completely new seed on patched firmware and transferring funds to the new wallet. A firmware patch can fix the generation process going forward, but it cannot retroactively make a previously predictable seed unpredictable.
The incident also changes how Bitcoin users should think about “cold storage.” Offline storage reduces many attack surfaces, but it does not eliminate software risk, supply-chain risk, configuration mistakes or weaknesses introduced during wallet creation. Security has to be considered across the entire process: seed generation, firmware, backup procedures, transaction verification and operational discipline.
There is also a broader industry lesson here. Hardware-wallet users often assume that a physical device automatically means maximum security. The Coldcard incident demonstrates why independent security reviews, reproducible randomness, open-source verification and rapid vulnerability disclosure matter just as much as secure hardware components.
For long-term Bitcoin holders, the practical takeaway is straightforward: know which firmware generated your wallet seed, verify whether your device falls within the affected scope, follow the manufacturer's current security guidance, and never assume that an old seed becomes safe simply because the device software has been updated.
This incident does not mean self-custody is inherently unsafe. It means self-custody requires understanding what actually protects the assets. A wallet is not just a piece of hardware sitting offline; it is an entire security system.
The biggest number in this incident is 1,789.28 BTC, but the bigger warning is even more important: security failures can begin long before a Bitcoin transaction is signed.
For Bitcoin holders, the rule should be simple: verify the security of the wallet creation process, keep firmware current, protect recovery information, and treat unexpected security disclosures as a reason to investigate immediately not after funds have already moved.
