NVIDIA EARNINGS: I AM BULLISH, BUT THE REAL TEST IS GUIDANCE
My position before NVIDIA’s upcoming earnings is BULLISH, but I do not think investors should look at the headline revenue number alone.
NVIDIA is scheduled to report its fiscal Q2 2027 results on August 26, and expectations are already extremely high. Current estimates are around $92 billion in quarterly revenue and roughly $2.08 to $2.09 in adjusted EPS. That means a simple earnings beat may not be enough to send the stock sharply higher.
The market is asking a much bigger question:
CAN NVIDIA CONTINUE TO OUTGROW THE EXPECTATIONS CREATED BY THE AI BOOM?
That is the real earnings trade.
WHY I AM STILL BULLISH
NVIDIA remains at the center of the AI infrastructure cycle.
The company is no longer simply a semiconductor story. Its GPUs, networking products, complete AI systems and software ecosystem have become critical components of the data-center expansion being funded by the world’s largest technology companies.
The scale of AI infrastructure spending remains enormous.
That gives NVIDIA an unusually strong demand environment.
Recent market previews point to continued Blackwell demand and expectations for another major revenue increase. Analysts are also watching the transition toward newer platforms such as Vera Rubin because the long-term value of NVIDIA depends on whether its product roadmap can continue creating another generation of demand after Blackwell.
This is why I believe the earnings report should be analyzed as a forward-looking event rather than a backward-looking quarter.
THE NUMBER THAT MATTERS MOST IS NOT REVENUE
Suppose NVIDIA reports $93 billion instead of approximately $92 billion.
That would be a strong result.
But if management provides weak forward guidance, investors could still sell the stock.
Now imagine the opposite.
NVIDIA beats expectations modestly, but management delivers a stronger outlook for the next quarter, confirms robust Blackwell demand and provides confidence in the next generation of AI infrastructure.
That combination could be much more powerful for the stock.
The market does not pay for yesterday’s revenue.
It pays for expectations of tomorrow’s growth.
That is why guidance is my number-one factor going into this report.
BLACKWELL DEMAND IS THE SECOND KEY
The next major question is whether Blackwell demand remains strong enough to support the next phase of NVIDIA’s growth.
Investors want evidence that hyperscalers and other large AI customers are continuing to expand their infrastructure spending.
The AI story has moved beyond experimentation.
Companies are now spending enormous amounts on computing capacity, data centers, networking and energy infrastructure.
NVIDIA sits directly in the middle of that investment cycle.
If management indicates that demand remains stronger than available supply, the bullish thesis becomes considerably stronger.
But if customers begin slowing capital expenditure or extending deployment timelines, the market could start questioning the sustainability of the current growth rate.
MARGINS WILL MATTER TOO
There is another factor that could easily be overlooked.
Gross margin.
NVIDIA has generated extraordinary profitability during the AI boom, but increasingly complex AI systems, networking requirements, component costs and system-level infrastructure can create pressure on margins.
Current market commentary is watching whether gross margin can remain around the mid-70% range.
For me, the ideal earnings combination would be:
Strong revenue.
Strong EPS.
Strong forward guidance.
Healthy gross margins.
Continued Blackwell demand.
Positive commentary on the next product cycle.
If all five appear together, the bullish reaction could be significant.
THE BIGGEST RISK: EXPECTATIONS
This is where the NVIDIA trade becomes difficult.
NVIDIA can report excellent numbers and still fall.
Why?
Because expectations are already extremely high.
The stock has become one of the most important companies in the global equity market, with a market capitalization above $5 trillion.
That means investors are no longer asking whether NVIDIA is growing.
They are asking whether NVIDIA can grow fast enough to justify an enormous valuation.
This creates an unusual situation.
A normal company beating estimates can rally strongly.
NVIDIA may need to beat estimates and simultaneously convince investors that future growth will remain exceptional.
That is a much higher standard.
THE AI RALLY IS NOT ONLY ABOUT NVIDIA
Another reason I am watching this earnings report closely is its impact on the entire AI market.
NVIDIA is effectively a barometer for AI infrastructure spending.
If NVIDIA delivers a powerful report and stronger guidance, the reaction could spread beyond NVDA into semiconductor companies, networking providers, data-center infrastructure, power infrastructure and other AI-related stocks.
But if NVIDIA disappoints, the damage could also spread.
Investors could start questioning whether the massive AI capital expenditure cycle is producing enough returns.
That makes this earnings report bigger than one company.
It is becoming a test of the AI investment thesis itself.
MY BULL CASE
My bullish scenario is straightforward.
NVIDIA beats revenue expectations.
EPS comes in above consensus.
Blackwell demand remains strong.
Management provides stronger forward guidance.
Gross margins remain healthy.
And the company gives investors confidence that the next generation of AI platforms can continue the growth cycle.
If that happens, I believe the market could interpret the earnings as confirmation that the AI boom still has significant room to run.
In that scenario, I would expect NVDA to regain momentum after the earnings volatility.
MY BEAR CASE
The bearish scenario is also clear.
NVIDIA beats the headline number but gives cautious guidance.
Margins disappoint.
Blackwell demand shows signs of slowing.
Large customers become more cautious about AI capital expenditure.
Or management provides insufficient visibility into the next product cycle.
In that situation, investors may take profits even if the quarterly results technically beat expectations.
This is why I would not blindly buy simply because NVIDIA reports another record quarter.
THE MOST IMPORTANT SIGNAL
For me, the most bullish sentence NVIDIA could deliver is not:
“We beat expectations.”
It is:
“Demand remains stronger than supply, and our next generation of AI infrastructure is already seeing extraordinary customer demand.”
That would tell the market that the growth cycle is continuing.
The AI trade needs future demand.
Not just past revenue.
MY FINAL POSITION
I am BULLISH on $NVDA going into earnings.
But my bullish thesis has conditions.
I want to see strong numbers, strong guidance, sustained Blackwell demand and healthy margins.
If NVIDIA delivers those together, I believe the AI rally can continue.
If the company only beats the headline estimates without raising confidence in future growth, I would expect a much more volatile reaction.
That is why I think the market’s biggest mistake would be focusing only on whether NVIDIA beats EPS.
THE REAL QUESTION IS:
CAN NVIDIA BEAT THE EXPECTATIONS OF A $5 TRILLION COMPANY?
That is a much higher bar.
My pre-earnings stance:
$NVDA: BULLISH
Main catalyst: August 26 earnings
Key metric: Forward guidance
Key demand signal: Blackwell and next-generation AI infrastructure
Key risk: Extremely high expectations
Key confirmation: Strong revenue plus strong future outlook
I am not bullish simply because NVIDIA is an AI leader.
I am bullish because the underlying AI infrastructure cycle remains powerful, NVIDIA continues to occupy a critical position within that ecosystem, and the next generation of computing demand could extend the company’s growth runway.
But earnings day will be about expectations.
If NVIDIA beats both the numbers and the narrative, I believe the AI rally can strengthen.
If it only beats the numbers, the reaction could be very different.
That is my side before earnings:
BULLISH ON $NVDA, BUT WATCHING GUIDANCE MORE THAN THE HEADLINE BEAT.
