#FedSeesTreasuryMarketFunctioningWell
Kashkari’s message was direct: the Treasury market is functioning fine.
The Minneapolis Fed President pushed back against concerns over rising yields, stating that liquidity remains ample and market signals are intact. The 10-year closed near 4.73% last week while longer-dated yields stay elevated, yet he sees no dysfunction that would force the Fed to change its approach. In his view the central bank can continue treating the policy rate as its primary tool for inflation control.
TLT, the long-duration Treasury ETF, reflects the same environment on the daily chart. Price is currently near 82.04, sitting below both the 50-period EMA at 83.32 and the 200-period at 84.42. RSI has drifted to 44.13 and MACD remains slightly negative. The chart has been making lower highs since the earlier peaks near 89, with support now being tested in the low 81 area. The price action is consistent with a market that is adjusting to higher yields rather than one that is seizing up.
When a senior Fed official publicly describes conditions as orderly, it reduces the probability that the central bank feels compelled to intervene in the bond market itself. That keeps the focus on the traditional rate path and away from balance-sheet or emergency liquidity measures. For markets that have been pricing in various forms of policy support, the distinction matters.
The constructive reading is that elevated yields are being absorbed without systemic stress, which allows the Fed to stay on its preferred reaction function. The more cautious reading is that yields can still move higher and that TLT’s technical structure has not yet shown a clear reversal. Functioning well does not automatically mean yields have peaked.
I take Kashkari at his word on the liquidity assessment while still respecting the price trend in long-duration bonds. The market is being allowed to clear; that is different from the market being rescued. The next few weeks of yield action will show whether 4.73% on the 10-year becomes a temporary high or a new baseline.
How are you reading the combination of official reassurance and the still-soft technical picture in TLT?
