NVDA: Earnings Week Is the Real Test
Price structure: NVIDIA closed Friday at $214.72, down about 0.98% on the session. The bigger picture is more interesting: NVDA fell from $225.16 on Aug. 14 to $214.72 on Aug. 21, a decline of roughly 4.6% in one week. The stock is still well above its early-August levels, but short-term momentum has clearly cooled.

Volume and liquidity: Friday volume was close to 98 million shares, while the recent sessions have generally traded around 90–115 million shares. That tells me this is not an illiquid pullback; there is real participation while price is being repriced ahead of earnings. The first important demand area is around $211–$214, with accumulated-volume support near $211.14.

Resistance: The immediate ceiling sits around $218–$220, followed by the $225–$228 zone where NVDA repeatedly struggled during the previous week. A clean reclaim of $220 would improve the short-term structure, but the more meaningful breakout is above $228. Above that, the market can start looking back toward the $235–$236 area, close to the previous May high.

Psychological levels: $200 is the major round-number support underneath the current structure, while $220 and $225 are the near-term psychological checkpoints. If buyers defend $210–$214 and reclaim $220, the chart can quickly shift from correction mode back into continuation mode. Losing $210 would make $200 much more relevant.

Options positioning: This is where the setup becomes unusually sensitive. NVDA earnings are scheduled for Aug. 26 after the U.S. market close, and options are pricing roughly a 5–6% earnings move, which translates into a broad reaction zone of approximately $203–$227 from the $214–$215 area. Call open interest has also been building, so dealer hedging can amplify a move once price escapes the current range.

Institutional flow: I would not label the recent decline as aggressive institutional distribution without stronger flow evidence. In fact, Morgan Stanley's recent work highlighted NVIDIA as relatively under-owned versus its S&P 500 benchmark weight, which leaves room for institutional demand if earnings strengthen the AI-growth narrative. At the same time, the weekly decline shows that large investors are willing to reduce exposure when expectations become crowded.

Earnings catalyst: The real trigger is Wednesday's report. Wall Street is looking for roughly $92 billion of revenue and $2.09 adjusted EPS, with data-center revenue expected to remain the central driver. The market will care about more than the headline beat: Blackwell demand, the Vera Rubin roadmap, margins, China exposure and forward guidance are likely to determine whether buyers actually chase the stock.

AI demand versus expectations: NVIDIA's fundamentals remain extremely strong, but the problem is the size of the expectation already embedded in the price. Q1 FY2027 revenue reached $81.6 billion, up 85% year over year, so another strong quarter alone may not be enough. The market needs evidence that AI infrastructure spending can keep accelerating through Blackwell and into Rubin.

Macro backdrop: NVDA is entering earnings while the broader Nasdaq is under pressure. The Nasdaq lost about 2.1% last week, while rising Treasury yields and uncertainty around Federal Reserve policy have made investors more selective with high-growth technology stocks. That means even excellent NVIDIA numbers could face a valuation-driven reaction if the broader risk environment deteriorates.

Bullish scenario: The clean bullish setup is a defense of $211–$214, followed by a decisive reclaim of $220. If earnings and guidance beat the already-high expectations and NVDA pushes through $228, the next major area becomes $235–$236. A sustained break above that zone would restore the broader bullish structure and potentially open the way toward new highs.

Bearish scenario: If NVDA loses $211 and cannot quickly reclaim it, the correction can extend toward $205, which is also near the lower edge of the options-implied earnings range. A decisive break below $205 would weaken the structure further and put $200 into focus. The bearish case becomes much stronger if earnings beat but guidance or margins disappoint, because that would show that the market's expectations were simply too high.

My read: NVDA is not giving a clean pre-earnings trend right now. It is sitting between strong fundamental demand and an extremely high expectations bar. For me, $211–$214 is the key demand zone and $220–$228 is the decision area. The next major move is more likely to be determined by earnings guidance and positioning than by another ordinary technical candle. In this setup, confirmation matters more than prediction.
