Three attractive fixtures are on the schedule, but if I have to choose the match I feel most confident about, my pick is Fulham vs Chelsea.

The match is scheduled for August 25 at 03:00 UTC+8 at Craven Cottage. This is a particularly interesting Premier League opener because both clubs are beginning a new chapter with new managers. Fulham are now led by Álvaro Arbeloa, while Chelsea begin their competitive campaign under Xabi Alonso.

My prediction is Fulham 1–2 Chelsea.
The reason I am choosing Chelsea is not simply because of the club's name. I am looking at the overall squad quality, attacking options, summer recruitment, tactical potential and the circumstances surrounding both teams.

Chelsea finished last season in 10th place with 52 points, while Fulham finished 11th with the same number of points. So, based purely on last season's league table, there was very little separating them. However, Chelsea have made a major investment in their squad during the summer, spending more than £300 million, with Morgan Rogers among the headline additions.

That makes this match especially interesting because Chelsea have significantly more attacking depth, but they are also playing their first competitive match under Xabi Alonso. There will inevitably be some uncertainty about the exact tactical system and how quickly the new players can adapt.

Chelsea's expected attacking structure could be particularly dangerous. Cole Palmer is likely to play a central creative role, while Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro give Alonso additional attacking quality. Danny Welbeck is also available for selection after recovering from a minor issue.

For me, Cole Palmer is one of the biggest players to watch.

He has the ability to create something from almost nothing, especially when Chelsea are able to control possession around the edge of the penalty area. If Fulham give him too much space between the midfield and defensive lines, Chelsea could create several dangerous opportunities.

Joao Pedro is another player I will be watching closely. He scored 15 Premier League goals last season, so Chelsea already have a proven goal threat at the top end of the pitch.

At the same time, I don't expect Fulham to simply sit back and accept pressure.

This is a London derby, and Craven Cottage can create a difficult atmosphere for an away team. Fulham also beat Chelsea 2–1 at Craven Cottage in January 2026, so Chelsea know from recent experience that this fixture can become uncomfortable very quickly.

Fulham also have a new manager in Álvaro Arbeloa, meaning they will be highly motivated to make a strong first impression.

The biggest concern for Fulham, in my view, is their defensive situation. Joachim Andersen is suspended, while captain Tom Cairney is unavailable because of a knee injury. That removes experience from an important opening-day fixture.

Chelsea also have absences. Wesley Fofana is suspended, Jordan Henderson has a wrist injury and Emmanuel Emegha is unavailable, while Welbeck faces a fitness consideration.

So neither side comes into this match at full strength.

That is one reason I don't expect an easy Chelsea victory.

I think Fulham have enough quality to score, particularly with home advantage, but Chelsea's attacking depth should eventually make the difference.

My expected game pattern is Chelsea controlling more of the ball and creating more high-quality attacking situations, while Fulham look for transitions and opportunities to exploit Chelsea's new defensive structure.

The first 20–30 minutes could be extremely important.

If Chelsea score early, the game could open up significantly. Fulham would then have to push forward, leaving more space for Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro.

If Fulham score first, however, my prediction becomes much more difficult because the home side would have exactly the type of game state they want: Chelsea forced to attack while Fulham can defend deeper and counter.

That is why I think the first goal could determine the overall direction of this match.

My expected score: Fulham 1–2 Chelsea.

I can also see a 2–1 or 2–2 type of match if both teams' new tactical systems create defensive gaps.

For me, Chelsea's strongest route to victory is through their attacking quality.

Palmer's creativity, Rogers' movement and Joao Pedro's finishing give them several different ways to create chances. Chelsea have also shown encouraging attacking form during pre-season, winning three of their six friendlies.

Fulham, meanwhile, had a mixed pre-season with two wins, two draws and two defeats across six matches. Their final warm-up did provide a clean sheet against Stuttgart, which is a positive sign, but the opening-day test against Chelsea will be significantly more demanding.

There is also an interesting historical factor.

Chelsea have won six of their last eight visits to Craven Cottage, although Fulham's 2–1 victory in January means Chelsea cannot afford to rely on history alone.

So my confidence comes from the combination of Chelsea's squad depth, attacking quality and historical advantage away at Fulham, rather than from any single statistic.

Now, if I compare the three matches in today's event:

Bologna vs Lazio looks much more difficult to predict. Both clubs are beginning with new managers, and Lazio have already experienced disappointment after their Coppa Italia elimination by Mantova. Several previews see a tight game, with one prediction calling for a 1–1 draw and another for 2–2.

Roma vs Fiorentina is another fascinating matchup. Roma finished third last season and enter the new campaign under Gian Piero Gasperini with Champions League ambitions, while Fiorentina finished 15th and have rebuilt their squad under Fabio Grosso. Roma's home advantage and stronger recent league finish make them attractive, but Fiorentina have enough attacking quality to make this dangerous.

That leaves Fulham vs Chelsea as my preferred selection.

The Chelsea side I am expecting to see should have enough quality to create the difference, but I don't expect the match to be one-sided.

My personal prediction is:

Fulham 1–2 Chelsea

First-half possibility: 0–1

Full-time winner: Chelsea

Main player to watch: Cole Palmer

Potential game pattern: Chelsea possession + Fulham counterattacks

Most likely outcome in my view: Chelsea win by one goal

I would also keep an eye on the possibility of both teams scoring because Fulham have already demonstrated that they can trouble Chelsea at Craven Cottage, while Chelsea's new attacking structure should create chances of its own. A recent prediction from TNT Sports also landed on Fulham 1–2 Chelsea, while highlighting Palmer as a major attacking threat.

My final thought is that opening-week matches are always difficult because pre-season form does not perfectly translate into competitive football.

New managers need time.

New players need time.

Tactical systems need time.

And that is exactly why I am avoiding an overly aggressive prediction such as 0–3 or 0–4.

I think Chelsea have the stronger individual quality, but Fulham have the home advantage and enough attacking ability to make Chelsea work for the three points.

So I am going with a narrow Chelsea victory.

Final prediction: Fulham 1–2 Chelsea.

Chelsea to take the three points, but Fulham to make the Blues work until the final whistle.
