Tungsten Is Becoming an AI Supply-Chain Bottleneck
The AI boom is creating a shortage that most people were not watching: tungsten. This is no longer just an industrial-metal story. Tungsten is used in semiconductor manufacturing, including tungsten-based microscopic connections inside advanced chips, making reliable supply increasingly important as AI hardware demand accelerates.

The pressure is coming from both sides. China’s tighter controls on tungsten-related exports have reduced access to key raw materials, while semiconductor demand continues to rise. Japan has been particularly exposed because two major producers of tungsten hexafluoride (WF₆), a critical semiconductor gas, have faced raw-material supply problems and production disruptions. Reports indicated that the two Japanese suppliers represented roughly 25% of global WF₆ capacity.

The price signal is already significant. TrendForce reported that WF₆ prices reached about $149.79/kg in April 2026, representing a more than 200% month-on-month increase, while other industry reporting has pointed to even larger year-on-year increases. That shows how quickly a bottleneck in a relatively small but strategically important material can move through the semiconductor supply chain.

The bigger story is that tungsten supply cannot be expanded overnight. Mining, refining and high-purity processing require years of investment, while AI data centers and advanced-memory production are scaling much faster. The IEA says tungsten prices had already surged roughly sixfold through April 2026, highlighting how strategic-mineral markets are being reshaped by export controls and strong technology demand.

That is why the reported 70–90% H2 price-increase expectations deserve attention, but they should be treated as a market forecast rather than a guaranteed outcome. If alternative suppliers ramp successfully, the squeeze could ease. If replacement capacity takes longer than expected, semiconductor manufacturers may face higher input costs, longer procurement cycles and stronger competition for secure supplies.

The next phase could therefore be bigger than a simple commodity rally. Tungsten is becoming part of the global race for AI infrastructure security. Governments are already encouraging domestic recycling and alternative supply chains, while new mining projects are being revived outside China. The real question for the second half of 2026 is not whether AI needs more tungsten — it is whether the supply chain can expand fast enough to keep up.
