Inter Milan vs Monza Can the Champions Begin the New Serie A Campaign With a Statement?

San Siro opens the title defense

The 2026/27 Serie A season begins at San Siro with defending champions Inter Milan facing newly promoted Monza on August 22. Inter enter the campaign as the reigning champions after a dominant domestic season, while Monza return to the top flight after winning the Serie B playoffs. The matchup therefore brings together two teams entering the new season from very different positions: Inter are defending the Scudetto, while Monza are immediately facing one of the strongest squads in Italy.

The market is heavily behind Inter

The pre-match market reflects that difference. Current moneyline prices have Inter around -450, with the draw around +550 and Monza around +1400. Those prices translate into a very strong expectation that the Nerazzurri will begin their title defense with three points.

That does not make the result automatic, but it explains why Inter are entering the match as overwhelming favorites.

San Siro adds another layer

The venue is a major advantage for Inter. This is not simply a home opener; it is the champions returning to San Siro with the Scudetto on their shirts. Inter have also been extremely difficult to beat in opening-day matches at the Meazza: their last defeat there on the first matchday came in 1987, followed by 17 wins and three draws across the next 20 opening-day matches.

That historical pattern makes the home edge particularly relevant.

Monza will have to handle the atmosphere, the pace and the pressure of facing the champions before they have even settled into the new season.

The head-to-head record favors Inter

This will be only the seventh Serie A meeting between Inter and Monza. In the previous six, Inter have recorded three wins and two draws, with Monza winning once. At San Siro, Inter have won two of the three Serie A meetings, while Monza have one victory.

There is also a much more recent warning for Monza: Inter destroyed them 5–1 in January 2024, one of the heaviest defeats in Monza's Serie A history.

The history therefore gives Inter another psychological advantage, although Monza will obviously approach this match with a completely different squad and tactical plan.

Inter have upgraded without abandoning their identity

One of the most interesting elements of Inter's summer has been the attempt to refresh the squad without destroying the tactical structure that made them champions.

Veterans have departed, including Denzel Dumfries and other experienced figures, while Inter have added John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Djed Spence. Spence officially joined from Tottenham on a long-term deal, while Stones arrived after leaving Manchester City.

The objective is clear: introduce more athleticism and depth while maintaining the three-at-the-back foundation.

Inter are expected to continue using a 3-5-2 structure, with wing-backs providing width and Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram leading the attack.

The Lautaro–Thuram factor

There is another fascinating opening-day trend.

Since Thuram joined Inter in 2023, either Lautaro or Thuram has scored a brace in every opening-day league match of their partnership.

Lautaro scored twice against Monza in 2023.

Thuram then scored twice against Genoa in 2024.

He repeated the feat with two goals against Torino in 2025.

Now the same attacking partnership gets another opening-day opportunity against Monza.

That does not mean another brace is guaranteed, but it demonstrates how consistently Inter's attacking leaders have delivered at the beginning of recent Serie A campaigns.

Monza's challenge is tactical discipline

Monza's best chance is unlikely to come from trying to dominate possession against Inter.

Their more realistic approach is to stay compact, defend the central channels and attack the spaces behind Inter's wing-backs when possession changes hands.

Monza's current squad has been reinforced with several younger players, including attacking midfielder Foe Ondoa, striker Gustavo Varela and defender Eddy Kouadio. The club is attempting to adapt quickly after returning to Serie A.

But the biggest challenge is maintaining concentration for 90 minutes.

Against Inter, one defensive mistake can become a goal within seconds.

The tactical mismatch

Inter's mature structure allows them to attack from multiple zones.

The wing-backs can stretch Monza horizontally.

Barella and Çalhanoğlu can control the midfield rhythm.

The three-man defensive structure gives Inter security behind the ball.

And Lautaro and Thuram can attack the box from different angles.

Monza, meanwhile, are expected to rely on a more intense 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-1-2 structure, with aggressive pressing and width. That system can work, but against Inter it also creates the danger of leaving space between the defensive and midfield lines.

If Monza press too aggressively, Inter can play through them.

If Monza sit too deep, Inter can gradually suffocate them with possession and repeated attacks.

That is the tactical dilemma.

One suspension for the champions

Inter's main confirmed disciplinary absence is Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who is suspended for the opener. Monza currently have no suspended players listed for this fixture.

On paper, that absence does not remove Inter's midfield advantage. The squad has enough depth for Chivu to adjust without completely changing the team's identity.

That depth is one of the biggest differences between the two sides.

Why I expect a controlled Inter victory

Inter do not need to turn this into a chaotic match.

Their best route is actually the opposite: control the tempo, move Monza from side to side, use the wing-backs to create overloads and wait for the defensive structure to break.

Once Inter score, Monza will have to take more risks.

That is when Lautaro and Thuram become particularly dangerous.

The longer the match stays level, however, the more important Monza's defensive discipline becomes.

My prediction

I am backing Inter Milan to win.

My primary prediction is:

Inter Milan 2–0 Monza

My alternative is:

Inter Milan 2–1 Monza

The 2–0 scenario fits the overall matchup best: Inter control possession, create the majority of quality chances and keep Monza away from dangerous areas.

The 2–1 scenario becomes possible if Monza successfully exploit a transition or set piece, but I still expect Inter's quality to decide the match.

Final call

The champions have the stronger squad.

They have the stronger tactical structure.

They have the San Siro advantage.

They have the superior recent head-to-head record.

And the market is overwhelmingly pricing an Inter victory.

Monza's return to Serie A is a major achievement, but opening the season against the defending champions in their own stadium is about as difficult as it gets.

My final prediction is therefore clear:

Inter Milan 2–0 Monza.

Alternative: Inter Milan 2–1 Monza.

The first three points of the Scudetto defense could set the tone for the entire campaign.
