#Gate事件合约积分榜 Real Madrid vs Espanyol Can Mourinho’s New Era Start With a Statement Win?
A difficult away opener for Madrid
Real Madrid begin their 2026/27 LaLiga campaign away from home against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona on August 22. This is officially Matchday 2 for Madrid because their opening fixture against Real Sociedad was postponed until August 26. Despite playing away, the pre-match numbers strongly favor Real Madrid: one current model gives Madrid a 56.33% win probability, compared with 23.08% for a draw and 20.55% for Espanyol. Opta's model is even more bullish, giving Madrid a 62.4% chance of victory.
The ground changes the equation
The RCDE Stadium gives Espanyol the biggest advantage they have in this matchup. They will have the home crowd behind them and, historically, this venue has produced much closer meetings than Real Madrid's overall record might suggest. In 101 meetings between the clubs at Espanyol's home ground, Espanyol have won 41 while Madrid have won 40.
So this is not a simple Bernabéu home game where Madrid can control everything from the opening whistle. Espanyol have the environment, familiarity and emotional advantage. Madrid, however, have the much stronger squad depth and individual quality.
The historical balance still favors Madrid
Across the overall rivalry, this is the 202nd meeting between the two clubs. Real Madrid have won 119, while Espanyol have won 46, with the remaining matches ending level. That historical gap explains why the market continues to place Madrid comfortably ahead despite the away venue.
The long-term record therefore points clearly toward Madrid, while the stadium-specific numbers tell us that Espanyol cannot be dismissed.
That combination makes the opening 20–30 minutes particularly important.
A completely new Madrid chapter
This match also carries extra significance because José Mourinho is beginning his second spell as Real Madrid manager. His return has already created a different tactical atmosphere around the team. Mourinho has emphasized collective responsibility and competitive intensity, while also facing the challenge of balancing the enormous attacking talent available to him.
The biggest tactical puzzle is how Mourinho combines Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr. and Jude Bellingham without allowing the team to become unbalanced. Mourinho has specifically spoken about finding the right balance rather than building the entire system around one superstar.
That could make this opening match as much about structure as individual brilliance.
Madrid’s attacking edge
The biggest advantage for Real Madrid is obvious: they can hurt Espanyol in multiple ways.
Mbappé gives them explosive depth and finishing.
Vinícius provides one-versus-one ability and transition speed.
Bellingham can attack spaces between midfield and defense.
And Madrid's squad announcement also includes Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler, Brahim and several new additions, giving Mourinho significant options from the bench.
If Espanyol defend too narrowly, Madrid can attack the wings.
If they push higher, Mbappé and Vinícius can attack the space behind.
If they sit deep, Bellingham and the midfield can become increasingly important around the box.
That tactical flexibility is why Madrid remain the stronger side even without home advantage.
Espanyol’s opportunity
Espanyol should not try to compete with Madrid by simply opening the game.
Their better strategy is likely to be compact defending, disciplined midfield spacing and quick transitions whenever Madrid commit numbers forward.
Espanyol manager Manolo González has emphasized the need for his team to remain defensively solid for the entire match while still attacking with purpose. He also highlighted Madrid's quality in positional play and transitions.
Espanyol enter the match with competitive rhythm already established after beating Levante, while Madrid's first league match was postponed. That could give the home side an early sharpness advantage.
Team news matters
Madrid's official squad includes Courtois, Lunin, Huijsen, Trent, Konaté, Cucurella, Rüdiger, Dumfries, Bellingham, Camavinga, Valverde, Arda Güler, Bernardo, Vinícius Jr., Mbappé and other options.
However, Endrick and Aurélien Tchouaméni are absent, while Militao, Rodrygo and Mendy remain sidelined according to the latest squad reporting.
For Espanyol, Cabrera is suspended, while Javi Puado and Kike García are reported unavailable through injury.
Those absences slightly reduce Espanyol's defensive and attacking depth, while Madrid still possess enormous quality across multiple positions.
Where the game could be won
I expect Madrid to have the greater share of attacking territory, but Espanyol could make the first half uncomfortable.
The key battle will be Madrid's ability to break through a compact defensive block without becoming vulnerable to counterattacks.
If Madrid score first, the match could open dramatically.
Espanyol would then have to move forward, creating exactly the spaces Madrid's fastest attackers want.
If Espanyol survive the first half without conceding, however, pressure could shift toward Madrid because this is their first competitive match of the campaign.
My prediction
I agree with the strong Madrid favorite scenario.
My primary prediction is:
Espanyol 0–2 Real Madrid
My alternative is:
Espanyol 1–3 Real Madrid
The 0–2 result fits a controlled Mourinho-style away performance: Madrid absorb the early pressure, gradually take control and punish Espanyol when opportunities appear.
The 1–3 scenario becomes possible if Espanyol score or open the game after conceding first. In that situation, Madrid's attacking quality could create multiple transition opportunities.
Final call
The RCDE Stadium gives Espanyol a genuine home advantage, and their competitive rhythm makes this more dangerous for Madrid than a simple probability chart suggests. But the overall head-to-head record, squad depth, attacking quality and current prediction models all point toward Real Madrid.
With models ranging from roughly 56% to 62% for a Madrid victory, the statistical case is clearly on the visitors' side.
My prediction is therefore confident:
Real Madrid to win 2–0.
Alternative: Real Madrid 3–1.
Mourinho's new era does not need to begin with spectacular football. It needs three points.
And against an Espanyol side that will fight hard at home, Madrid's ability to turn pressure into decisive moments could be the difference.
