Real Betis vs Real Sociedad a tricky opener with an away-side upset in mind

The 2026–27 La Liga campaign brings an intriguing early test as Real Betis face Real Sociedad at the Estadio La Cartuja in Seville. The match is scheduled for August 21, and although Betis have home advantage, this is exactly the type of fixture where preseason expectations can be turned upside down quickly. Both teams have plenty of attacking quality, but there are enough uncertainties on both sides to make this a much closer contest than the names alone suggest.

Real Sociedad enter this matchup after finishing 10th last season with 46 points, a disappointing position compared with their recent European ambitions. Their objective this season is clearly to move back toward the upper half of the table and compete for European places again. Mikel Oyarzabal remains a major attacking reference point, giving Sociedad a player capable of changing the game even when his team is not dominating possession.

Betis, meanwhile, have the benefit of playing in Seville and have shown that this matchup can favor them at home. Their most recent league meeting with Sociedad at this venue ended in a 3–1 Betis victory, while the previous meeting in May finished 2–2. The recent head-to-head record is therefore remarkably competitive rather than one-sided.

The interesting part is that Real Sociedad have already demonstrated that they can hurt Betis. Across the last five listed meetings, the two sides have recorded two wins each and one draw. That tells me there is no reason to treat this as a straightforward home win simply because Betis are playing in Seville.

Betis also have some important availability concerns. Current team-news reports indicate that Diego Conde and Aitor Ruibal are expected to miss the match, while Gonzalo Petit and Giovani Lo Celso are among the players whose fitness has required attention. Abdessamad Ezzalzouli has also been listed with a knee issue.

Real Sociedad have their own concerns, with Pablo Marín, Jon Gorrotxategi, Álvaro Odriozola and Gonçalo Guedes among the players listed as unavailable or carrying fitness issues in the latest squad information. Guedes has returned to group training, which could improve Sociedad's options, but his match availability still needs to be considered carefully.

That makes the midfield battle particularly important. Betis will want to establish possession and use their attacking players to force Sociedad deeper, while La Real can look for opportunities through quick combinations and the individual quality of Oyarzabal and their attacking unit.

Another reason I am giving Sociedad a serious chance is the psychological element of an early-season match. Both teams are still developing rhythm, and neither side has had a long competitive run to establish a completely reliable pattern. That can make tactical discipline and individual moments more important than preseason reputation.

The previous 2025–26 meeting at Betis provides an interesting clue. Betis eventually won 3–1, but Sociedad were competitive for long periods and the match was level at 1–1 at half-time. That suggests Sociedad can create problems in this stadium, even if Betis have the ability to take control later.

For me, the biggest question is whether Betis can convert their home advantage into enough clear chances. If they dominate possession without creating high-quality opportunities, Sociedad could become increasingly dangerous as the game develops.

My expected match script is a relatively balanced opening, followed by Betis trying to control territory. Sociedad should remain patient rather than committing too many players forward. If the visitors can survive the early pressure, their confidence should increase and the match could become much more open after the break.

That is exactly where I see the possibility of a Sociedad result.

I am not expecting a high-scoring thriller. With both teams dealing with squad uncertainties and the season still at its early stage, I see a match where one decisive moment could separate them.

If Sociedad score first, Betis will have to take more risks, which could create additional counterattacking opportunities for the visitors. If Betis score first, however, the entire prediction becomes much more difficult because their home advantage and ability to control possession could allow them to protect the lead.

So I would keep the alternative outcome close.

A 1–1 draw is the result I would consider if neither side can establish control. But if I have to select one winner, I am going against the home side.

My reasoning is not that Betis are the weaker team. It is that Sociedad have enough individual quality, recent competitive experience in this matchup and attacking threat to make the away win realistic, while Betis are entering the game with several availability questions.

The market may prefer Betis because of home advantage, but this is exactly the kind of fixture where a confident underdog prediction can stand out.

My prediction

Real Betis 0–1 Real Sociedad

Alternative result: 1–1

I expect a tight first half, limited space in the central areas and a match that could remain level for a long time. But if Real Sociedad take one of their opportunities and then defend intelligently, I believe they can leave Seville with all three points.

Final pick: Real Sociedad to win 1–0.
